SPIRITUALIZED: NEW SINGLE AND VIDEO ‘CRAZY’ OUT NOW

SPIRITUALIZED

“CRAZY”

SECOND SINGLE FROM EVERYTHING WAS BEAUTIFUL

OUT FEBRUARY 25th ON FAT POSSUM

A record of cosmic proportions”– PITCHFORK

With their new LP Everything Was Beautiful due out February 25th via Fat Possum, and having previously shared album opener ‘Always Together With You’, today Spiritualized share a video for new single Crazy, a sweet country-soul lament which features backing vocals from Nikki Lane. The stunning video, directed by J Spaceman and partly inspired by Andy Warhol’s Kiss, can be viewed HERE.

While some people imploded in the lockdowns and isolation of the epidemic, others were thriving. “I felt like I’d been in training for this my whole life” says J Spaceman. He was referring to his fondness for isolation and when you reframe loneliness as “beautiful solitude” then it isn’t so bad. He would walk through an empty “Roman London” where “even the sirens had stopped singing” and where the world was “full of birdsong and strangeness and no contrails.” He used the birdsong walks to listen and try and make sense of all the music playing in his head. The mixes of his new record, a ninth studio album, weren’t working out yet.

Spaceman plays 16 different instruments on Everything Was Beautiful which was put down at 11 different studios, as well as at his home. He also employed more than 30 musicians and singers including his daughter Poppy, long-time collaborator and friend John Coxon, string and brass sections, choirs and finger bells and chimes from the Whitechapel Bell Foundry. So there’s a lot going on.

“There was so much information on it that the slightest move would unbalance it, but going around in circles is important to me. Not like you’re spiraling out of control but you’re going around and around and on each revolution you hold onto the good each time. Sure, you get mistakes as well, but you hold on to some of those too and that’s how you kind of… achieve. Well, you get there.”

Eventually the mixes got there and Everything Was Beautiful was achieved. The result is some of the most “live” sounding recordings that Spiritualized have released since the LiveAtTheAlbert Hall record of 1998, around the time of Ladies & Gentlemen, We Are FloatingInSpace.

The opening track “Always Together With You” is a reworking / supercharging of a track originally released in demo quality in 2014. This new version is a perfect Spiritualized song; a breathtaking, hard-edged, psychedelic pop tune where themes of high romance and space travel collide.

The artwork is designed once again with Mark Farrow. If you buy the vinyl you can pop a pill box out of the sleeve, revealing gold foil underneath, and assemble the Braille-embossed little thing and put it somewhere in the house. The box set has 8 of them. Literally a boxset. It looks more beautiful in the flesh. “Farrow and I were talking about what we should do and we just said, ‘It’s called Everything Is Beautiful, how could you not have a pill?’”

All these layers, all these details, the year-long mixes, the making sense of it all and the lives lived within these lyrics; for somebody so famously unconfident of his own abilities, isn’t this a punishing thing to keep doing? “Yeah, but I like what I do. There’s a line from Jonathan Meades that’s about having all the attributes to being an artist. ‘Paranoia, vanity, selfishness, egotism, sycophancy, resentment, moral nullity and more idiot than idiot savant.’ “And that’s what it feels like, this kind of thing. You’re your own worst enemy and biggest supporter. “There’s a ‘Of course this is worth it. It’s me’ and then this kind of deep doubt of ‘What the fuck is this all about?’ “And then ‘Why is it important?’ and then knowing there’s no easy answer. But it’s there. I know it’s there.”

Damon Albarn: January 24 at Walt Disney Concert Hall

Damon Albarn

Only U.S. Concert in Support of The Nearer the Fountain, More Pure the Stream Flows
January 24, 2022, at 8PM, at Walt Disney Concert Hall

Tickets on sale Wednesday, December 15, at 10AM PDT

The Los Angeles Philharmonic announced today that Damon Albarn will play a rare, one off U.S. concert in support of his recently released second solo album The Nearer the Fountain, More Pure the Stream Flows on January 24, 2022, at 8PM, at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

The Nearer The Fountain, More Pure The Stream Flows evolved during lockdown into 11 new tracks included on the album, having been originally conceived as an orchestral piece inspired by the landscape of Iceland, In a career of perpetual musical shifts and exploration, the record uncovers fresh ground, finding expansive orchestral arrangements nestling around intimate melodies, discordance brushing up against infectious majesty, all set to some of Albarn’s most arresting vocal performances to date. Much like the beauty and chaos of the natural world it soundtracks, The Nearer The Fountain, More Pure The Stream Flows vividly documents the emotional ebb and flow of the human condition, in all its extremes, serving as a soul enriching document for our times.

For his performance at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Albarn will perform on piano, accompanied by strings, playing songs from The Nearer the Fountain… alongside selections from his vast songbook of Blur, Gorillaz, The Good, The Bad & The Queen and various solo and collaborative works.

Tickets go on sale Wednesday, December 15, 2021, at 10AM PDT and can be purchased at LAPhil.com.

Today, Amazon Music announced The LCD Soundsystem Holiday Special, an innovative virtual event streaming December 22, featuring the band on the heels of their sold-out 20-show residency in Brooklyn. Comedian, actor, and writer Eric Wareheim (Tim & Eric) will direct and star in the special, which also features a star-studded cast including Macaulay Culkin, Christine Ko, and Aparna Nancherla portraying the band in a ‘90s-inspired sitcom titled All My Friends. Amazon Music invites fans around the world to watch on the Amazon Music channel on Twitch and Prime Video beginning at 6 p.m. PST/9 p.m. EST on December 22.

Named for the 2007 LCD anthem, the All My Friends sitcom is set inside a fictional home shared by all of the members of LCD Soundsystem, with Eric Wareheim playing the band’s fearless leader, James Murphy. The cast also includes actors Christine Ko as Nancy Whang (vocals and keyboards), Macaulay Culkin as Pat Mahoney (drums), Tony Cavalero as Nick Millhiser (synth), Cory Loykasek as Al Doyle (guitar and synth), Aparna Nancherla as Abby Echiverri (synth), Jon Daly as Tyler Pope (bass), Rex Lee as Brian Graf (LCD Soundsystem’s manager), Luenell as the band’s tour manager, and Eric’s puppet as Korey Richey (synth). After the sitcom opens the show, the real LCD Soundsystem will take the stage to perform a career-spanning set-capped off with a special rendition of the band’s 2015 single, “Christmas Will Break Your Heart,” performed live for the first time ever.

“I’ve already conquered film, James has conquered music, but we have yet to conquer the sitcom—the HIGHEST form of art,” said Eric Wareheim. “We’ve been working on this project for 15 years, and for this show we’re unveiling a uniquely emotional perspective of the sitcom universe for the holidays—provided by one of the greatest bands of all time and my dear friends, LCD Soundsystem. I can’t believe Amazon Music is letting us do this.”

“I am similarly stunned that someone let us do this,” said James Murphy. “At least we finally get to use our Korey puppet.”

Emerging from New York in the early ‘00s, LCD Soundsystem released the acclaimed albums LCD SoundsystemSound of Silver, and This Is Happening, before playing a 2011 farewell concert at New York’s Madison Square Garden immortalized as the recently reissued The Long Goodbye. The band reunited five years later, and in 2017 released their #1-charting fourth album, American Dream, which featured the Best Dance Recording GRAMMY-winning “Tonite.” American Dream is available to stream hereThe LCD Soundsystem Holiday Special airs on the Amazon Music channel on Twitch and on Prime Video for all Amazon customers globally on December 22 at 6 p.m. PST/9 p.m. EST. “What I really enjoy about the Daddy’s Home album is using this camp energy in a really violent way,” Mark Bowen of IDLES explained. “This embracing of the nostalgic even the kitsch but using it to make progressive futuristic music. It reminded me a lot of the energy of early house and techno but wrapped up in this early ’70s aesthetic.  I wanted to ramp up the camp and the violence in the remix but still maintain the sentiments and sensibilities of the original track.”

Daddy’s Home was released May 14, 2021 on Loma Vista Recordings, to raves including “In an industry crowded with artists who claim singularity, there is perhaps no musician more deserving of the label than St. Vincent” (Interview), “St. Vincent’s sound is more electric than ever” (Los Angeles), “St. Vincent has gotten to the point where we can’t look away, because there’s just nobody in indie pop quite like Annie Clark” (Paste)—not to mention early best of 2021 nods from USA Today, Variety, Entertainment Weekly, Uproxx, Flood, the AV Club and more.

Having spent much of 2021 being brought to life by St. Vincent and the Down and Out Downtown Band on the stages of venues including Radio City Music Hall and the Hollywood Bowl, Daddy’s Home is currently racking up year-end best-of accolades from the likes of The Guardian and Rolling Stone — with the latter adding, “Slinky, smart, and gloriously down-and-out, St. Vincent’s latest brings us back to the New York of the Velvet Underground… Our generation’s rock & roll chameleon, Annie Clark delves into her formerly incarcerated father’s record collection to deliver Bowie- and Prince-esque tunes that are simultaneously utterly her own…”

Paul McCartney and Wings: Wild Life 50th Anniversary Limited Edition Vinyl Release February 4th

Paul McCartney and Wings
Wild Life
50th Anniversary Limited Edition Vinyl Release
To Be Released February 4, 2022

Marking today’s 50th anniversary of the December 7, 1971 release of Paul McCartney and Wings’ Wild Life, UMe announces the February 4, 2022 reissue of Wings‘ debut LP as a limited edition half-speed mastered vinyl pressing. Pre-Order the 50th Anniversary Limited Edition of Wild Life HERE.

Following the eclectic charm and intimacy of 1970’s solo McCartney and 1971’s homespun lo-fi indie-pop progenitor RAM credited to Paul and Linda McCartney, Wild Life found Paul once again redefining his post-Beatles creative identity, this time beginning his tenure as a founding member of Wings. A rollicking left turn from its predecessors, Wild Life was recorded in barely more than a week, with more than half of the songs captured in a single take. The end result would be eight songs running the gamut from joyous freewheeling jams to proto-chamber pop to spare introspective musings — all bristling with a raw, jagged energy akin to the grungiest of garage bands—whether on the careening blues-rock rave-up of opener “Mumbo,” a reggae-tinged reimagining of Mickey & Sylvia’s “Love Is Strange,” or the plaintive and heart wrenching ballad “Dear Friend.”

Cracking the top 10 and going gold in the US, Wild Life faced an admittedly uphill battle as the debut of Paul’s first post-Beatles band. In a recent reassessment, Billboard noted that modern-day Wild Life listeners “can throw out all this cultural baggage and just enjoy the tunes… by not reaching for any obvious Beatles tropes, Wings achieved something fresh and inviting…” And in fact, Wild Life would prove to be the first spark of the Wings phenomenon that would develop and flourish into one of the defining sounds of ’70s rock n roll. The streak of #1 albums from Red Rose Speedway, Band On The Run, Venus And Mars, At The Speed Of Sound through the 3LP live opus Wings Over America, and the sold-out shows that provided the blueprint for the ’70s arena rock experience—can all be traced back to the big bang of those first eight months during which Wings would form, release Wild Life in December 1971 and play their first-ever live shows in February 1972.

The 50th anniversary edition of Wild Life was cut at half speed at Abbey Road Studios using a high resolution transfer of the original 1971 master tapes.

PAUL McCARTNEY AND JACK MCCOY “SLIDIN’ (EOB REMIX)” VIDEO LIVE NOW

PAUL McCARTNEY AND JACK MCCOY TEAM UP AGAIN WITH SURFRIDER FOUNDATION AUSTRALIA

“SLIDIN’ (EOB REMIX)” VIDEO LIVE NOW AT
https://PaulMcCartney.lnk.to/SlidinEOBvideoPR

Paul McCartney has once again collaborated with filmmaker Jack McCoy, spreading awareness of the importance of protecting our coastlines by dedicating his new “Slidin’ (EOB Remix)” video to ocean charity Surfrider Foundation Australia.

Paul McCartney and Jack McCoy have collaborated a number of times over the past decade, and whenever they do their mutual love of the ocean is always the focus.

In December 2020, McCartney released his GRAMMY-nominated McCartney III album, featuring “Slidin’”—a track he felt would be perfectly accompanied by some surfing and ocean footage and turned to McCoy to see if he could lend a hand.

“As soon as I heard the song I said to myself ‘Craig Anderson’,” McCoy said. “I called on some of Craig’s friends to provide me with some amazing footage and made what became the official video for the track.

“With Paul’s blessing, Craig and I chose to dedicate the video to Surfrider Foundation to help beat the drum with their ongoing fight for our coastline, in particular the current fight to STOP PEP11, a proposal to drill for oil and gas off the NSW coastline.”

A few months later McCoy got wind that McCartney was about to release McCartney III Imagined, a full album reinterpretation of McCartney III curated by Paul himself and featuring a diverse selection of friends, fans and brand new acquantaintances —  including Anderson .Paak, Beck, Dominick Fike, Phoebe Bridgers, St. Vincent and of course EOB a/k/a Ed O’Brien of Radiohead.

“Ed O’Brien from Radiohead produced a pumped-up version of ‘Slidin’’ which I thought would be perfect to make another surfing video as sort of a bookend to the first,” says McCoy.

“Doing this remix for Paul was a lot of fun,” O’Brien said. “The winter was dark and a second lockdown was imminent, but working on this track with Paul Epworth was a moment of light. So good to get those stems and hear those vocals… great drums too… all instruments played by Paul! We took inspiration from an earlier song of his—basically we were trying to ‘Helter Skelter’-it up! Great video and collaboration with the Surfrider Foundation…”

At his recent Surf Talk and Jam Tour, McCoy was introduced to film maker Tyge Landa and began collaborating on McCoy’s latest opportunity with McCartney, which features 9 of the world’s best free surfers also in support of Surfrider Foundation Australia.

“Surfrider Foundation is humbled to collaborate on this project with music, film and surfing royalty. ’Slidin” captures the surfing spirit beautifully, and the clip has been a huge help in spreading Surfrider Foundation’s message that we must all help protect our oceans and coastlines,” says Damien Cole, Surfrider Foundation National Campaign Director.

The official “Slidin’ (EOB Remix)” video launch is accompanied by a series of “making of” videos featuring McCoy and Landa, as well as some of the surfers—all of which can be seen at surfrider.org.au. Be sure to sign the petition for Surfrider’s Stop PEP 11 campaign while you are there.

ABOUT SURFRIDER FOUNDATION

Surfrider Foundation Australia is a not-for-profit sea-roots organisation dedicated to the protection of Australia’s waves and beaches through conservation, activism, research and education.  Their mission is to inspire and engage surfing coastal communities to protect our waves and beaches.

PEP11 (Petroleum Exploration Permit 11) is a 4576 sq km area off the coast between Sydney and Newcastle that is under threat from being developed as an offshore oil and gas field. There is currently no oil and gas in production off the Australian east coast, and the development of PEP11 would risk one of the most beautiful marine environments in the world.
