THIRD MAN RECORDS ANNOUNCES AUGUST RELEASES FROM LORETTA LYNN, LANIE LANE, WHITE DENIM

Available at Third Man Records in Nashville,thirdmanrecords.com, iTunes & The Third Man Rolling Record Store

Third Man Records heats up an already sweltering summer with a trio of very special August releases from Loretta Lynn, Lanie Lane and White Denim.

First up is the debut vinyl pressing of Loretta Lynn”s Van Lear Rose (TMR-063), out August 9. This multiple Grammy winning 2004 classic paired Lynn with Third Man”s own Jack White and the result was one of the most acclaimed and beloved records of the modern era (Van Lear Rose is tied with Brian Wilson”s Smile as the aggregated highest rated non-reissue record in Metacritic”s history). With all songs composed by Lynn and White at the helm of the record”s raw and heartfelt vibe, Van Lear Rose is more than worthy of its two Grammy Awards (Best Country Album and Best Country Collaboration with Vocals for lead single “Portland, Oregon”).

The inaugural vinyl edition of Loretta Lynn”s Van Lear Rose is mastered directly from the original analog masters, pressed on heavyweight 180-gram vinyl and coupled with a vibrant Stoughton tip-on sleeve. There will be a limited edition blue vinyl pressing of 300, 100 copies of which will be sold at Third Man dgfev online casino Records in Nashville on Aug. 9th from 12 noon. Details re: where the rest will be sold to follow.

On August 23, Lanie Lane will release the latest of the Jack White-produced Blue Series 45s, “Aint Hungry” b/w “My Man” (TMR-108) on 7” vinyl and iTunes. Imbued with the spirit of Muddy Waters, and channeling the grit of Billie Holiday, Lanie  (pronounced “Lannie”) Lane wraps the sounds of a golden age around a voice that is as rich and warm as it is sweet. Her delivery is distinct – earthy, with the elbow grease to get the job done, but tied up with a colorful ribbon and handed over with grace and charm.

Finally and also on August 23, White Denim will release the newest installment in the Live at Third Man album series (TMR-102). Showcasing material from the new album D, White Denim”s Live at Third Man set is an amazing collection of freaked out southern rock space explorations from Austin TX”s finest.

The new releases will be available at the Third Man store in Nashville, at thirdmanrecords.com, from iTunes and on The Third Man Rolling Record Store as it visits the Newport Folk Festival and other destinations to be announced.

NIRVANA: NEVERMIND 20TH ANNIVERSARY TO BE COMMEMORATED WITH MULTI-FORMAT REISSUE OUT SEPTEMBER 27

Deluxe and Super Deluxe Editions to Feature Dozens of Rare and Previously Unreleased Performances

Released in September 1991, Nirvana”s sophomore album and major label debut elevated Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl from a critically acclaimed Aberdeen, Washington, cult band to generational spokesmen who”d unwittingly created a cultural shift and musical touchstone. Rising to No. 1 the world over by year”s end and ultimately selling over 30 million copies worldwide, Nevermind would come to be much more than one of the most successful and influential albums of its or any era.  As the album that returned unaffected rock ’n’ roll integrity and passion to the top of the charts, Nevermind would prove a singular inspiration to fans and musicians alike over the last two decades–and will undoubtedly do so for generations to come.

Now on the occasion of Nevermind“s 20th anniversary, Universal Music Enterprises presents a full spectrum re-release worthy of such a pivotal classic. With configurations ranging from a 4-CD/1-DVD Super Deluxe Edition to a standard digital/CD remaster of the original album, the 20th anniversary reissue of Nevermind makes the most of the occasion, unearthing literally dozens of previously unreleased recordings, obscure B-sides, alternate mixes, radio sessions, studio rarities and live recordings, including a 1991 Halloween concert at Seattle”s Paramount Theatre in its entirety.

The limited, numbered Super Deluxe Edition more than lives up to its name as one of the most expansive and ambitious collections of its kind with only 10,000 copies available in North America, and another 30,000 for the rest of the world. The Super Deluxe features not only the original remastered album and accompanying studio and live B-sides, but the first full official release of the pre-Nevermind demos recorded at producer Butch Vig”s Smart Studios, as well as boombox recordings of subsequent rehearsals through which the listener can actually experience “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Come As You Are,” “On A Plain” and others that take shape before his or her very ears. The Super Deluxe also offers an altogether new perspective on the finished Nevermind album exclusive to this format in the form of the Devonshire Mixes: the album as produced and mixed by Vig as opposed to the commercially released final version produced by Vig and mixed by Andy Wallace. Rounding out the Super Deluxe are a pair casino online of previously unreleased BBC recordings and the aforementioned 1991 Paramount show available for the first time and exclusive to this format on CD and DVD (which also features all four music videos from Nevermind), as well as a stunning 90-page bound book full of rarely and never- before-seen photos, documents and various other visual artifacts of the Nevermind era.

The Nirvana Nevermind 20th anniversary reissue is also available as a 2-CD Deluxe Edition featuring the remastered album and B-sides, the Smart Studio sessions, boombox rehearsals and BBC sessions, a 4-LP, 180-gram heavyweight vinyl edition featuring the same 40 tracks as the Deluxe Edition, a remastered CD of the original album, and digital versions of the standard and deluxe editions. The Paramount concert, transferred from 16mm film and multi-track audio, is the only known Nirvana concert shot to film and will be available in a 1080p high-definition picture and uncompressed 5.1 surround sound and stereo on stand-alone Blu-ray, along with DVD and digital long form video formats.

PAUL McCARTNEY ON THE RUN TOUR CONTINUES WITH DETROIT, MONTREAL, CHICAGO AND CINCINNATI DATES

July 24 at Comerica Park, Detroit
July 26 and 27 at Bell Centre, Montreal
July 31 and August 1 at Wrigley Field, Chicago
August 4 at The Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati

“At 69, Mr. McCartney is not saying goodbye but touring stadiums and playing marathon concerts. Friday’s set ran two-and-a-half hours, with Mr. McCartney constantly onstage, and it had 35 songs, not counting a few additional excerpts.

His concerts now are a gentle reminder of his survival and vitality…

He perseveres, and entertains, by directly reconnecting to his songs across the decades and still having fun.”–THE NEW YORK TIMES

“McCartney’s continued ability to perform such key material so gracefully makes his shows more than just worthy entertainment. They’re a kind of public service.”–THE NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

“The 2½-hour, 35-song set featured five decades worth of hits without a dud in the batch”–THE NEW YORK POST

“Paul McCartney is many things, a gifted musician, singer and band leader. Mostly, he is an inspiration.

Last night at Yankee Stadium, McCartney played and played, gave and gave, for well over two hours. He never stopped singing, playing, performing and smiling. He loves pleasing crowds.”–THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

“Dude is almost twice my age, and that f***er canbelt, and in the physical-grace department, my blind guess of his age might have been more like a very agile 50. I could barely stand in front of my center field seat, which proved necessary pretty much the entire time…

Changed my life”–THE VILLAGE VOICE

Having just made July 15 and 16 New York City’s music event of the summer with two sold out shows at Yankee Stadium that kept approximately 90,000 fans singing along for nearly three hours each night, Paul McCartney’s On The Run continues this week with six more North American dates: July 24 at Comerica Park in Detroit, July 26 and 27 at Montreal’s Bell Centre, July 31 and August 1 at Wrigley Field in Chicago, and August 4 at the Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati.

Each and every one of this summer’s On The Run dates can safely be predicted to feature nearly three hours of the world’s most familiar and beloved music, with hits, deep cuts and surprises spanning McCartney’s unrivaled catalogue of Beatles, Wings, solo and Fireman classics.

As on his Live 2009 tour and Up and Coming’s 2010 run and every Paul McCartney tour since 2002, Paul will be backed by the combo the LAS VEGAS SUN called “his best band since, well, the Beatles”: Paul “Wix” Wickens (keyboards, guitar, percussion, harmonica, backing vocals), Rusty Anderson (guitar, backing vocals), Abe Laboriel Jr. (drums, backing vocals) and Brian Ray (guitar, bass, backing vocals).

McCartney’s recently completed Up and Coming Tour played over three dozen shows to more than 1,000,000 fans from its March 2010 start through its June 10, 2011 conclusion at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, drawing arguably the most enthusiastic audiences and critical notices of McCartney’s peerless near-50-year career.

McCartney’s 2011 live agenda began with his  first ever show in Peru, and included his first Chilean gig since 1993, and two blockbuster shows at Rio de Janeiro’s Estadio Olimpico Joao Havelange, which also resulted in the first ever concert to be broadcast live on the internet throughout Latin America–allowing over 1.5 million fans who were unable to snap up one of the 100,000 tickets to share in the magic.

In addition to overwhelming levels of critical acclaim wherever McCartney has recently played across North America, South America and the UK, last year saw many career firsts for Paul. These included rocking The White House in front of President Barack Obama and his family in June when Paul was made the first ever British recipient of the prestigious Gershwin Prize For Popular Song.  Paul returned to the White House in December (where even the President joked about Paul becoming a regular there) to be awarded with a Kennedy Center Honor. Paul ended 2010 with a December 11 visit to Saturday Night Live in New York City followed by a career landmark first ever performance at Harlem’s famed Apollo Theater on December 13 and three intimate homecoming shows in the UK.  He played the smallest club show of his career at London’s legendary 100 Club to just 300 people, which made headlines as far as China.  The final two shows were at the Hammersmith Apollo and at Liverpool’s O2 Academy, both of which broke venue box office records.

McCARTNEY AFTER 9/11

Highly-Anticipated Feature-Length Documentary “THE LOVE WE MAKE” Chronicles Paul McCartney’s Cathartic Journey Through New York City In The Aftermath of 9/11.

To Debut on SHOWTIME September 10th At 9:00 ET/PT

LOS ANGELES, CA (July 19, 2011) – As the country prepares to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks on New York, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania, SHOWTIME will premiere the highly-anticipated feature documentary THE LOVE WE MAKE, which chronicles Paul McCartney’s poignant and cathartic journey through the streets of New York City in the aftermath of the World Trade Center’s destruction. It also traces the planning and performance of the monumental benefit concert at Madison Square Garden, “The Concert for New York City,” which took place less than six weeks after the terrorist attacks.  Directed by iconic documentary filmmaker Albert Maysles (Gimme Shelter, Salesman, Grey Gardens) and his award-winning filmmaking partner, Bradley Kaplan (Muhammad and Larry, Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out!,Sand and Sorrow), THE LOVE WE MAKE was shot in the signature cinéma vérité style that Maysles pioneered and Windows 7 Clave made famous when he filmed the Beatles’ first visit to America in the legendary 1964 documentary What’s Happening! The Beatles in the U.S.A.  Shooting once again in 16mm black & white, Maysles’ camera intimately captures McCartney’s personal journey to help heal the city that welcomed him with open arms in 1964. The announcement was made today by David Nevins, President of Entertainment, Showtime Networks Inc.

On the morning of September 11, 2001 McCartney was on a plane on the tarmac in New York City, scheduled to leave the country when the attacks took place.  Grounded, he returned to the city and witnessed first-hand the shock and devastation that overtook the United States.  He returned to the city and saw first-hand the destruction and tragic consequences of one of the most horrific days in U.S. history.  Directors Maysles and Kaplan, along with Editor Ian Markiewicz (The Beales of Grey Gardens) assembled extraordinary, intimate, never-before-seen footage of McCartney rehearsing for the benefit concert, connecting with New Yorkers on the city streets, and storytelling behind-the-scenes at interviews with Dan Rather, Howard Stern and others.
Windows 8 Clave Additionally, the film features performances from the benefit concert itself and unparalleled access backstage with McCartney and luminaries from the worlds of music, Hollywood and politics, including David Bowie, Steve Buscemi, Eric Clapton, President Bill Clinton, Sheryl Crow, Leonardo DiCaprio, Harrison Ford, Mick Jagger, Jay Z, Billy Joel, Elton John, Stella McCartney, Governor George Pataki, Keith Richards, James Taylor, Pete Townsend, and many more.

Says McCartney, “It was an honor to be able to help New York and America at that time in its history. There was a feeling of shock and fear in the air that I thought we could help alleviate with music. And the fact that so many people stepped up to join us made for a very uplifting evening for us all.”

“Paul McCartney and Albert Maysles are each, in their own fields, iconic artists whose collaboration goes back more than 40 years,” said Nevins.  “In the days following 9/11, they joined forces once again to make a very personal film that is a real testament to the spirit and resiliency of New York City.  We are very proud to be able to premiere this film.”

Filmmaker Maysles adds, “There was so much suffering as a result of 9/11 it’s hard to imagine how one might bring relief to those who were impacted by the attacks, and honor those firefighters, police officers and rescue workers who lost their lives in their heroic attempt to help others.  But Paul had the answer: music and a film that would tell the full story.”

THE LOVE WE MAKE is a Maysles Films, Inc. Production.  A Film by Albert Maysles, Bradley Kaplan, and Ian Markiewicz.  Directed by Bradley Kaplan and Albert Maysles.  Edited by Ian Markiewicz.  Cinematography by Albert Maysles.  Produced by Bradley Kaplan.

BLACK MILK: “BRAIN” B/W “ROYAL MEGA” (TMR-101) THIRD MAN RECORDS’ FIRST FORAY INTO HIP HOP OUT NOW

Third Man Records is excited to announce the release of “Brain” b/w “Royal Mega” (TMR-101), a new single by acclaimed Detroit MC and producer Black Milk, who co-produced both tracks with Third Man’s Jack White.

Third Man’s first foray into the hip hop world would naturally be a release from one of the most vital hip hop artists around. Black Milk (born Curtis Cross) made his recorded debut in 2004 as a member of B.R. Gunna on the Dirty District Vol. 2 compilation and released his solo debut Sound of the City the following year. Since then, Black Milk has built a rep as brilliant producer, working with the likes of the late J Dilla, Slum Village, and Lloyd Banks, while releasing four more solo albums (including 2010’s Album of the Year which cracked the Billboard 200) as well as numerous collaborations, most recently Random Axe (with Sean Price and Guilty Simpson).

Performed with a live 9-piece backing band, Black Milk’s debut single for Third Man is a funk and soul imbibed slice of classic head nodding hip hop.  Both tracks are written by Black Milk and co-produced by Black Milk and Jack White–who also contributes guitars to A-side “Brain” and drums to B-side “Royal Mega.”

“Brain” b/w “Royal Mega” is available now at finer vendors of independent vinyl, via thirdmanrecords.com and digitally from iTunes.

BEASTIE BOYS BECOME ACTION FIGURES IN NEW SPIKE JONZE-DIRECTED VIDEO

Ad-Rock, Mike D, MCA, and Special Guest Santigold Elude Mercenaries In Thrill-Packed “Don’t Play No Game That I Can’t Win” Clip

Having traveled through time and space in previous videos, Beastie Boys enter yet another new frontier in the brand new “Don’t Play No Game That I Can’t Win”: Under the direction of Spike Jonze (who has previously worked with the band on the classic “Sabotage” clip among others), Ad-Rock, Mike D, MCA and guest vocalist Santigold become action figures. GI B Boys, if you will.

The transformation comes with a price: “Don’t Play No Game That I Can’t Win” finds Beastie Boys and Santi pursued by a team of assassins hell bent on their termination. Over the course of the epic clip, our heroes make one death defying escape after another, traveling across land, sea and sky as they elude and combat snipers, zombies, sharks and more.

“Don’t Play No Game That I Can’t Win” is the second video from Beastie Boys’ universally acclaimed Hot Sauce Committee Part Two (Capitol), the first being the extended video for “Make Some Noise” a/k/a Fight For Your Right Revisited, which was directed by the band’s own Adam “MCA” Yauch and which Time magazine described as having more stars “than in a Judd Apatow flick.”
