Through both his solo work and as a frontman for the legendary Hüsker Dü, Bob Mould pioneered a signature wall of guitar sound and unmistakable vocal style that has imprinted a defining influence on more than one generation-impacting artists including Dave Grohl, Ryan Adams and Britt Daniel of Spoon, all of whom paid homage to Mould by performing songs from all stages of his career at a tribute show last year at L.A.’s Disney Hall. In the three decades encompassing his career thus far, however, Bob Mould saw his greatest success during his stint as lead singer, guitarist and songwriter for iconic early ’90s trio Sugar.

Mould broke onto the rock scene in the early 1980s as front man of the hardcore band Hüsker Dü. Hüsker Dü packed decades of creative evolution into the barely five years between the release of its first and final records, blowing eardrums and minds in equal measure while progressing from the primal breakneck caterwaul of Everything Falls Apart to the double-vinyl conceptual opus Zen Arcade to bona fide initial pop rock inroads with Candy Apple Grey before disintegrating in 1987. Mould re-emerged in 1989 as a sober and formidable singer/songwriter with his landmark solo debut Workbook, and continued working as a solo artist through the following year’s Black Sheets Of Rain.

Mould returned to a three-man band format with the 1992 debut of Sugar. With Mould on guitar and vocals, David Barbe on bass and vocals, and Malcolm Travis on drums, Sugar harnessed the sonic chaos of Hüsker Dü into a more focused pop/rock framework with increased emphasis on the songs’ exciting melodies and irresistible hooks as well as the increasingly accomplished musicianship behind them. Critics and audiences alike warmed to Sugar’s fresh and innovative balance of punishing volume and pop sparkle, with many regarding this phase as their favorite of Mould’s entire career.

Sugar’s 1992 debut album Copper Blue sold over 250,000 units upon its original release and received overwhelming praise. Rolling Stone christened it “thunderous”; Vogue dubbed it “smashing”. NME would ultimately name it their 1992 Album of the Year. Currently, Mould has been commemorating Copper Blue’s 20th anniversary by playing the record in its entirety with his current band of Jason Narducy (bass) and Jon Wurster (drums).

Recorded and mixed during the same intense sessions that produced Copper Blue, the Beaster EP was originally released in April 1993. Notably darker in tone than the widescreen power-pop of Copper Blue, Beaster nevertheless boasts some of Mould’s most powerful songwriting.

File Under: Easy Listening a/k/a F.U.E.L. — the third and final album by this short-lived but brilliant trio — was originally released in September 1994, featuring songs such as “Your Favorite Thing” that endure as mainstays of Mould’s solo performances to this day.

Mac McCaughan of Superchunk & Merge wrote of the reissues:
When word went around that Bob Mould had new band, not only a “band” band (as opposed to hired band to play his solo albums on tour) but also a trio, of course anyone raised from teenhood on punk rock and Husker Du in particular (like myself) went into high expectation mode. Copper Blue turned out to be a distillation of Bob’s pop mode and roaring guitar mode into one tightly wound explosion of sound. There was space enough for the songs to breathe, but a driving urgency & energy in the rhythm section of Barbe & Travis that gives the whole album a barely-harnessed feel. Sonically, on songs like “The Act We Act”  (Copper Blue), “JC Auto” (Beaster) & “Gee Angel” (F.U.E.L.) Sugar took Husker Du’s aesthetic widescreen, the center held steady by Bob’s focused songwriting. It’s kind of incredible what Sugar did within such a small discography; there’s no wasted space and the flow of great songs is a surprising, exciting listen 20 years later.

JACK WHITE ATTEMPTS NEW WORLD RECORD

Jack White has again decided to take on the tremendous challenge of making it into the Guinness Book of World Records.

During the rest of the performances on his current tour supporting his new album “Blunderbuss” (which incidentally is currently in the running for the world record of “the fastest named album in history” *pending), Jack White will every night on stage attempt to break the world record for most metaphors in a single concert.

The attempt may prove very exhausting and at times even dangerous, but the results could prove to be glorious and possibly even vainglorious. White and Third Man Records are certain that the extremely scientific and intricate analysis of the metaphors that occur will be examined in accordance with Guinness’ usually very thorough methods probably, or at the very least if somebody answers the phone at the pub.

Third Man Records encourages all attendees of said concerts to please not interfere or interject with any metaphors that they witness occur during the show as to not disqualify or worse yet, trivialize the metaphor in question. In addition all concert attendees are encouraged to entice as many metaphors to occur during the show that they possibly can as long as they don’t endanger themselves or Mr. White.

For your chance to participate in the making of history, Jack White & crew can be seen at one of the following venues:

ELECTRIC GUEST MAKE NETWORK TELEVISION DEBUT

PERFORM “THIS HEAD I HOLD” ON THE LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN

Electric Guest have found themselves in a world of incredible firsts.

First offer for a free jet pack ride, compliments of David Letterman when the band made their network television debut on The Late Show last week. Check out their infectious performance HERE

Last week’s first sold-out headlining show at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom was an exhilarating event. Jon Pareles of The New York Times lauded “the lean, confident, sleekly retro pop songs… Electric Guest’s songs were about the here and now. It’s recession-era pop, husbanding its most valued resources and worrying, tunefully, about the way ahead.”

Their first Rolling Stone review where their debut album Mondo (Downtown Records/Across The Universe) is commended as a “Proven talent…wired with sonic wit… a Beck-ian journey into L.A. slacker soul.”

Back in L.A. Electric Guest performed their current single “This Head I Hold,” live and shoeless on the Dick & Beaver Music Show for Wilcox Sessions: http://vimeo.com/41533043

Fans of the bands Keith Schofield directed music video for “This Head I Hold” can take a behind the scenes look at the making of the video which includes an extended cut into the wayward dance competition and spiritual desert trek: http://youtu.be/3ZVZbugBnMg

ADAM YAUCH 1964-2012

It is with great sadness that we confirm that musician, rapper, activist and director Adam “MCA” Yauch, founding member of Beastie Boys and also of the Milarepa Foundation that produced the Tibetan Freedom Concert benefits, and film production and distribution company Oscilloscope Laboratories, passed away in his native New York City this morning after a near-three-year battle with cancer. He was 47 years old.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Yauch taught himself to play bass in high school, forming a band for his 17th birthday party that would later become known the world over as Beastie Boys.

With fellow members Michael “Mike D” Diamond and Adam “Adrock” Horovitz, Beastie Boys would go on to sell over 40 million records, release four #1 albums–including the first hip hop album ever to top the Billboard 200, the band’s 1986 debut full length, Licensed To Ill–win three Grammys, and the MTV Video Vanguard Lifetime Achievement award. Last month Beastie Boys were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, with Diamond and Horovitz reading an acceptance speech on behalf of Yauch, who was unable to attend.

In addition to his hand in creating such historic Beastie Boys albums as Paul’s Boutique, Check Your Head, Ill Communication, Hello Nasty and more, Yauch was a founder of the Milarepa Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting awareness and  activism regarding the injustices perpetrated on native Tibetans by Chinese occupational government and military forces.  In 1996, Milarepa produced the first Tibetan Freedom Concert in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, which was attended by 100,000 people, making it the biggest benefit concert on U.S. soil since 1985’s Live Aid. The Tibetan Freedom Concert series would continue to stage some of the most significant benefit shows in the world for nearly a decade following in New York City, Washington DC, Tokyo, Sydney, Amsterdam, Taipei and other cities.

In the wake of September 11, 2001, Milarepa organized New Yorkers Against Violence, a benefit headlined by Beastie Boys at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom, with net proceeds  disbursed to the New York Women’s Foundation Disaster Relief Fund and the New York Association for New Americans (NYANA) September 11th Fund for New Americans–each chosen for their efforts on behalf of 9/11 victims least likely to receive help from other sources.

Under the alias of Nathanial Hörnblowér, Yauch directed iconic Beastie Boys videos including  “So Whatcha Want,” “Intergalactic,” “Body Movin” and “Ch-Check It Out.” Under his own name, Yauch directed last year’s Fight For Your Right Revisited, an extended video for “Make Some Noise” from Beastie Boys’ Hot Sauce Committee Part Two, starring Elijah Wood, Danny McBride and Seth Rogen as the 1986 Beastie Boys, making their way through a half hour of cameo-studded misadventures before squaring off against Jack Black, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly as Beastie Boys of the future.

Yauch’s passion and talent for filmmaking led to his founding of Oscilloscope Laboratories, which in 2008 released his directorial film debut, the basketball documentary Gunnin’ For That #1 Spot and has since become a major force in independent video distribution, amassing a catalogue of such acclaimed titles as Kelly Reichardt’s Wendy and Lucy,  Oren Moverman’s The Messenger,  Banksy’s Exit Through The Gift Shop, Lance Bangs and Spike Jonze’s Tell Them Anything You Want: A Portrait Of Maurice Sendak, and many more.

Yauch is survived by his wife Dechen and his daughter Tenzin Losel, as well as his parents Frances and Noel Yauch.

JACK WHITE: BLUNDERBUSS #1 ALBUM IN FOUR COUNTRIES

The people have spoken: Blunderbuss is #1.

The popular response to Jack White’s debut album has matched the critical fervor surrounding it: In the week since its April 24th release on Third Man Records/Columbia Records, Blunderbuss has sold 137,554 domestically, debuting at #1 on the U.S. albums chart–his first ever recorded effort to do so.

The highest charting and selling solo debut album this year in the U.S., Blunderbuss has also gone #1 in the UK, Canada and Switzerland–making a grand total of four countries where Blunderbuss currently tops the charts.

In America, Blunderbuss’ crashing into the #1 spot was heralded by Jack’s April 26th performance of “Freedom At 21” on The Colbert Report (http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/413296/april-26-2012/jack-white—-freedom-at-21-), an American Express Unstaged concert at Webster Hall on Friday April 27th (directed by Gary Oldman, with highlights archived atyoutube.com/jackwhitevevo) and another intimate underplay at Los Angeles’ Mayan Theater–a performance the Los Angeles Times called “suggestive of everyone from Chuck Berry, Hubert Sumlin and Keith Richards to Jimmy Page, Johnny Thunders and Joe Strummer… worthy of Bob Dylan… as if he’d gathered inside his head many different strains, accents and ideas of pre-digital American music — country, folk, blues, soul, rock ‘n’ roll and every combination thereof — and was pouring them out through his fretboard-busy fingers and wailing voice.”

The L.A. Times also joined in on the chorus of critical acclaim that has greeted Jack’s #1 debut album, seeing a new Rolling Stone 4.5 star lead review’s “huge riffs, wild ideas, tunes for miles: Jack White turns in a classic” and raising it with an “as impressive and magnetic a record as he’s ever made.”

On the touring front, Jack recently confirmed an all ages matinee show at the Scottish Rite Theater in Detroit on May 24th, a headline appearance at one day of the Roskilde Festival taking place July 5th-8th in Denmark, shows in Australia at Festival Hall in Melbourne on July 25th, Hordern Pavilion in Sydney on July 26th and  July 27th headlining the Splendour In The Grass Festival at Belongil Fields in Byron Bay, a headline show at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, CO on August 8th, and a performance at the Outside Lands Festival taking place August 10th-12th in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park.

DAVE GROHL TO DIRECT AND PRODUCE FEATURE DOCUMENTARY

(May 1, 2012, Los Angeles, CA) – Confirming widely circulated rumors, Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters and Nirvana announced today that he will direct and produce a feature Documentary film, SOUND CITY about the infamous recording studio in Van Nuys, California. The film was conceived by Grohl after purchasing the legendary Neve 8028 recording console from Sound City Studios last year. The console, built in 1972, is considered by many to be the crown jewel of analog recording equipment, having recorded such artists as Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Cheap Trick, Guns and Roses, Fear, Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Slipknot, Nine Inch Nails, Metallica, and countless other musical legends over the past 40 years.

Through interviews with the artists and producers that created decades of musical history at Sound City, the film will showcase the amazing history of the studio, focus on the albums recorded there that went on to change the world, discuss the human element of music in an age of technology, and feature performances from many of the artists that called it “home”.

Grohl’s personal connection to Sound City began with the 1991 recording of Nirvana’s breakthrough album, “Nevermind”. Selling over 30 million copies worldwide, “Nevermind” changed the entire musical landscape and forever altered the course of Dave Grohl’s life.

Roswell Films, a division of the Roswell Records label that releases Foo Fighters music, will distribute the film. Key personnel involved with the film include Producer/Director Dave Grohl; Editor Paul Crowder (Dogtown & Z Boys, Once In a Lifetime, Riding Giants); and Writer Mark Monroe (The Cove, Once In a Lifetime, The Tillman Story). The film is also being produced in conjunction with Jim Rota, John Ramsay, and Therapy studios.

Speaking to both the art of music and the art of filmmaking, Grohl crafted the letter below to share his vision for the film. Information and future announcements related to the film can be found at www.soundcitymovie.com
