Broken Bells New Single: “Shelter”

Broken Bells

New Single: “Shelter”

First New Recording Since 2014

Out Now on 30th Century Records via AWAL

The creators of 2010’s “Thrilling, Brilliant, Excellence” (LOS ANGELES TIMES) and 2014’s After the Disco’s even “Better songs, bigger hooks” (NME), Danger Mouse and James Mercer of The Shins, AKA Broken Bells, are back. Despite the next Broken Bells album being a work in progress, the duo has decided to share its epic yet intimate new single “Shelter,” now available through Danger Mouse’s 30th Century Records via AWAL.

“Shelter” was recorded during the first Broken Bells sessions since the stretch that resulted in 2014’s After the Disco album and the 2015 single “It’s That Talk Again.” The sweetly yearning new song represents a renewal of Broken Bells’ signature melodic yet experimental sound that first surfaced with the band’s critically acclaimed and top 10-charting debut in 2010. “Shelter” represents an intimate sonic shift for Broken Bells, as well as the first time the two have combined their unmistakable melodies, lyrics, vocals and singular composition style with samples.

This new twist in Broken Bells’ sonic evolution features Mercer’s airy yet riveting vocals combined with Danger Mouse’s deconstruction and reconstruction of sampled beats that provide the bedrock for “Shelter.” The end result is a solid hypnotic rhythm, with Mercer’s voice dancing atop it, creating a dramatic tension between newfound positivity and hints of darkness and dissonance.

In the wake of the triumphant headline stand at the Austin City Limits festival that the Austin American Statesman called “A Marathon to Remember Forever,”  Paul McCartney has added four new stadium plays to the upcoming U.S. leg of his new Freshen Up tour. The newly confirmed dates make for a total of 12 confirmed shows on Paul’s first extended Stateside run since the One On One Tour that played to some two million fans around the world during 2016 and 2017.

The Freshen Up tour is Paul’s first outing following the release of his #1 charting album, Egypt Station, released September 7th on Capitol Records to stellar reviews: Rolling Stone raved, “Macca keeps adding new gems to his songbook, with nothing to prove except he’s the only genius who can do this… And, oh yeah — in his spare time, he happens to still be the greatest live performer on Earth,” while Entertainment Weekly described the album as “the still-vital life force of a superstar who has been there and everywhere and is glad just to be here now.”

The newest additions to the U.S. leg of Freshen Up include Paul’s first ever appearances at Lambeau Field in Green Bay WI on June 8th, and Globe Life Park in Arlington TX on June 14th. On June 22nd and July 13th, respectively, Paul will return to Petco Park in San Diego and Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, both of which hosted unforgettable Paul performances to capacity crowds on his 2014 Out There tour.

The Paul McCartney live experience is everything any music lover could ever want from a show: Nearly three hours nightly of the greatest moments from the last 50 years of music, dozens of songs from Paul’s solo, Wings and of course Beatles catalogues that have formed the soundtracks of our lives. Paul and his band have played an unparalleled range of venues and locations throughout the Americas, the UK, Europe, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and all points between: outside the Coliseum in Rome, Moscow’s Red Square, Buckingham Palace, The White House, a free show in Mexico for over 400,000 people, the last ever show at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park where The Beatles played their final concert in 1966, a 2016 week in the California desert that included two headline sets at the historic Desert Trip festival and a jam-packed club gig for a few hundred lucky fans at Pappy & Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace, and even one performance broadcast live into Space! Featuring Paul’s band of the last 15+ years – Paul “Wix” Wickens (keyboards), Brian Ray (bass/guitar), Rusty Anderson (guitar) and Abe Laboriel Jr (drums) –and constantly upgraded state of the art audio and video technology that ensures an unforgettable experience from every seat in the house, a Paul McCartney concert is never anything short of life-changing.

Tickets will be on sale for the new dates 10am local time on Thursday, December 13th, with the exception of Green Bay, which will be on sale 10am local Monday, December 10th.

American Express® Card Members in Green Bay can purchase tickets before the general public beginning Wednesday, December 5 at 10am through Sunday, December 9 at 10pm local time and in Arlington, San Diego and Los Angeles beginning Monday, December 10 at 10AM through Wednesday, December 12 at 10PM local time.

On November 19th, Thom Yorke sat down for an interview and solo performance at Electric Lady Studios in New York City. The session features four songs—three from Thom’s original soundtrack for the Luca Guadagnino film—and a rare in-depth discussion of the creative processes involved in Suspiria and beyond.

A video of Thom’s performance of “Open Again” is live now at https://youtu.be/hJ9ljQXIrY4.

The session will be broadcast on December 4 KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic, with additional airings confirmed for Wednesday, December 5 on WYMS (Radio Milwaukee), Friday, December 7 on WFUV (New York) along with airings on KEXP Seattle, WXPN Philadelphia, KCMP Minneapolis & KVOQ Denver to be scheduled. SIRIUS XMU will begin airing the session Wednesday, December 12, with repeats through Sunday, December 16.

Recently named by the AV CLUB as one of the best film soundtracks of 2018, Suspiria (Music for the Luca Guadagnino Film) was released October 26 on XL Recordings. The album consists of 25 original compositions written by Thom specifically for Guadagnino’s reimagining of the 1977 Dario Argento horror classic. The album is a mix of instrumental score work, interstitial pieces and interludes, and more traditional song structures featuring Thom’s vocals including “Open Again,” “Has Ended,” “Suspirium,” and “Unmade”–the latter two having recently been performed for the first time before live audiences on Thom’s current Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes tour.

Suspiria was written and arranged by Thom Yorke, recorded and produced by Thom and Sam Petts-Davies. The album also features the London Contemporary Orchestra and Choir, Noah Yorke on drums on “Volk” and “Has Ended,” and Pasha Mansurov on solo flute on “Suspirium.”

Suspiria (Music for the Luca Guadagnino Film) is available across digital platforms, as well as 2-LP gatefold package pink vinyl and 2-CD physical versions.

2019 NORTH AMERICAN DATES CONFIRMED

Tickets On Sale Friday, December 7

And Nothing Hurt Out Now on Fat Possum Records

Following two intimate US performances in 2018, described by VOGUE as “revelatory” and by UPROXX as “staggering grandeur… every single person was laser-focused on that stage and soaking in every bit of the music emitting from it,” Spiritualized have confirmed a full 2019 North American tour in support of their critically acclaimed album And Nothing Hurt (Fat Possum).

Spiritualized will kick off the N.A. tour in March with an appearance at Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, continuing with stops in cities including Chicago, Boston, Washington DC, San Francisco and Brooklyn. See below for the full list of dates.

Presales begin Wednesday, December 5th at 10am local time; tickets go on sale to the general public Friday, December 7th at 10am local time.

Following its release in September, And Nothing Hurt was unanimously praised by critics, who raved:

“The new Spiritualized album is fucking great. It’s awesome. It’s suspiciously awesome…it’s glorious…every time I listen to And Nothing Hurt, I feel myself being lifted and swept away and moved. Every time I hear it, I feel a little more alive…I’m just as glad that Pierce sat at home, figuring things out, and then came along to utterly destroy us with a record this astonishing. You’re not fooling yourself. And Nothing Hurt really is that good.” STEREOGUM (ALBUM OF THE WEEK)

“Arguably the purest and most sentimental music J. Spaceman, a.k.a. Jason Pierce, has crafted…Nothing Hurt is the band distilled into its most affecting essence….if this really is the final Spiritualized album, as Pierce keeps threatening, it’s one hell of a grand statement to go out on.”AV CLUB

“it stands tall as a late candidate for the year’s best rock record. Spiritualized has added yet another chapter to its wild, dreamlike musical legacy, proving that rock isn’t dead and that maybe everyone else just isn’t trying enough.”CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND

“Distills and gathers the essence of what has often made Spiritualized so powerful…intricacy is the real delight of And Nothing Hurt. Despite the grandeur of these tunes, and the way they seem built to fill both regal concert halls and big, dark rock clubs, the best way to listen to them might be at home with lights out or eyes closed, headphones clamped tight…Pierce’s authorial scrupulousness and the same slavish devotion to an ideal that made Ladies and Gentlemen… a masterpiece and Spacemen 3 an institution gives these songs, one by one, their power.”PITCHFORK

“Gorgeous…what binds his gushing tunefulness and subtly cutting lyrics is the relationship between the universal quest for transcendence and the near-universal suspicion it’ll never be found…something more wrenchingly true to life, an alloy of hope with a sense of life’s limits.”THE ATLANTIC

LIVE FROM HERE December 15

MassEducation: Reimagining of MASSEDUCTION Out Now on Loma Vista

Following her December 2nd performance at the 41st Annual Kennedy Center Honors honoring Philip Glass with an intricate yet passionate instrumental performance “which received an enthusiastic two-thumbs up from a delighted Glass,” as reported by Billboard, St. Vincent will appear live during the New York City residency of Live from Here with Chris Thile (formerly A Prairie Home Companion).

On December 15th, Annie Clark—accompanied only by piano player Thomas Bartlett—will perform from the stage of New York’s Town Hall as part of a live broadcast from Minnesota Public Radio’s weekly musical mainstay.

Check https://www.livefromhere.org/listen/stations for local air-times.

St. Vincent’s MassEducation was released October 12th on Loma Vista, and was received by Rolling Stone as “the deep breath after the freak-out… less dense structures allowing Clark’s compositional and vocal talents to shine,” and Entertainment Weekly as “riveting reinterpretations… exposed and unadorned… a testament to her versatile songwriting and remarkable vocal strength.” MassEducation is in fact another dimension of last year’s universally acclaimed MASSEDUCTION. Recorded live in the studio over two nights in 2017, MassEducation lays bare the exquisite songcraft of its other half. Performed entirely by Annie Clark on vocals and Thomas Bartlett on piano, the new album renders songs like “Young Lover” and “Fear The Future” and their subjects in vivid, vulnerable new light. Clark herself describes the album as “two dear friends playing songs together with the kind of secret understanding one can only get through endless nights in New York City.”
