About Africa Express

Hailed as the most revolutionary force in popular music for two decades, Africa Express brings together musicians from different cultures, genres and generations to break boundaries and offer a new perspective on Africa and its music. Each event is unique, based upon on-the-spot collaboration and filled with unique moments of magic.

It was founded in 2006 with a trip to Mali linking the likes of co-founder Damon Albarn, Martha Wainwright and Fatboy Slim with local stars such as Toumani Diabaté, Bassekou Kouyaté and Amadou & Mariam. Then came the first public event: a legendary five-hour show at Glastonbury described by The Times as “an absolute lose-yourself epiphany for everyone who was there”.

Africa Express has since hosted trips to Nigeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, South Africa and Mali. It has also staged lauded shows in Lagos, London and Liverpool, as well as festivals across Europe such as Roskilde in Denmark and bespoke shows before 25,000 people in Paris city centre and 50,000 on a Spanish beach. Each performance is unique, with artists taking part creating the set before the show, and all have been met with rave reviews, inspiring artists and audiences alike.

In 2012, Africa Express filled a vintage train with 100 African and Western artists to play a week of shows across England, Wales and Scotland as part of the London 2012 Olympic Festival. The extraordinary tour, with performances in shops, schools and station platforms as well as more traditional venues, made waves worldwide with the likes of Baaba Maal and Carl Barat touring together. The final five-hour gig at King’s Cross saw Bassekou Kouyaté, Damon Albarn, Fatoumata Diawara, John Paul Jones, Gruff Rhys, Paul McCartney and Rokia Traoré all performing together at one stage.

The following year Africa Express returned to Bamako, Mali following the coup and Islamist takeover in the north to record two critically acclaimed albums (Africa Express Presents… Maison des Jeunes and Africa Express Presents… Terry Riley’s In C Mali) with local artists.  The In C Mali live performance project has subsequently been performed in partnership with Ruhrtriennale, Fondation Louis Vuitton Paris and The Space / Tate Modern.

In 2016 more than 50 Syrian musicians and singers were reunited by Africa Express as The Orchestra of Syrian Musicians for a European tour alongside guests including Damon Albarn, Rachid Taha, Paul Weller and Bassekou Kouyaté. For many of the Syrians, it was the first time they had seen each other since the outbreak of conflict five years earlier. The widely acclaimed tour, and subsequent album, helped highlight and celebrate the remarkable music culture of Syria, providing a more positive perspective than seen in the news.

Last year saw Africa Express head to Johannesburg, South Africa to record an electronic album in a week of discovery, collaboration, music-making and live performances. Details of new releases from this latest exciting project from Africa Express are coming soon.

Lo Res

At long last, the wait is over. The highly anticipated fourth solo album from Jenny Lewisis out today on Warner Bros. Records, available now at your local record store and all digital platforms: https://JennyLewis.lnk.to/OTL

The 11 all-new original songs were written by Lewis and recorded at Capitol Records’ Studio B, and feature a backing band of legendary talent including Beck, Benmont Tench, Don Was, Jim Keltner and Ringo Starr.

Reviews for On The Line are already ablaze with some of the highest critical praise of Jenny’s illustrious career:

“Her best solo album to date…she’s never recorded anything quite like On The Line. Her fourth solo album and first since 2014’s The Voyager sounds humongous: rafter-raising vocals, pianos that seem to ring out endlessly, and, on ‘Red Bull & Hennessy’ and ‘On The Line,’ an earth-shaking double-drum attack courtesy of session warhorse Jim Keltner and Ringo Starr. On The Line is the crispest-sounding entry in Lewis’ catalog, and the most emotionally complex” —AV CLUB

“sublime…might be her greatest work yet” —UPROXX

“Her best album in more than a decade” —WASHINGTON POST

“Her most opulent record to date, swinging from the stately folk of ‘Heads Gonna Roll’ to the cosmic rock of ‘Little White Dove”’ and ‘Red Bull & Hennessy,’ on which she fully channels 1980s Stevie Nicks…yet through her dulcet-voiced vignettes, Lewis carries a reassuring resonance that it’s going to be all right.” —SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE

“A sure-footed, Americana-tinged set led by a narrator who sounds world-weary and wiser for it.” —LOS ANGELES MAGAZINE

“On The Line’s sound is the biggest Lewis has ever created, but her unmistakable voice and knack for good storytelling keep it very much her own.”—BUST

“Jenny Lewis is an absolute legend…On The Line is another solid, gorgeously composed pop-rock Americana album from one of the most dependable songwriters in the game…there’s not a throwaway on the album…Lewis’ voice is a powerhouse…if it takes another five years to create a worthy follow-up then so be it.”—RELIX

“Lewis has always been a meticulous, detailed writer…the combination of her circumstances and the ambitious mix of musical styles behind her lyrics here makes her songs more poignant than ever. And she has plenty of first-class help to realize her vision.” —NEWSDAY

Preceding the album’s release, Jenny—backed by her live band featuring Jason Boesel, Jason Crosby, Dylan Day, Solomon Dorsey and Emily Elbert—made her triumphant return to Jimmy Kimmel Live! with stunning performances. In case you missed it, tune in here: https://JennyLewis.lnk.to/JKL

METALLICA & SAN FRANCISCO SYMPHONY Present S&M2: 20th ANNIVERSARY CONCERT

METALLICA & SAN FRANCISCO SYMPHONY
Present
S&M2: 20th ANNIVERSARY CONCERT
SEPTEMBER 6TH GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION AT THE CHASE CENTER

In celebration of the historic grand opening of the Chase Center—the new 18,064-seat arena in San Francisco’s Mission Bay neighborhood—two preeminent musical forces of the Bay Area will join together for the first time in 20 years: On Friday, September 6, Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony will commemorate this most anticipated addition to San Francisco’s cultural landscape by christening the new Chase Center stage with a one-night-only show. The S&M2 concert will also mark the 20th anniversary of Metallica and the SF Symphony’s groundbreaking 1999  S&M (“Symphony & Metallica”) concerts—and its subsequent film and album releases.

Legendary conductor Michael Tilson Thomas completes the first week of his final season as San Francisco Symphony Music Director with a special appearance, conducting a portion of the show.

The announcement was made earlier today at Chase Center with a press conference with Metallica’s Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield, who joined Michael Tilson Thomas from San Francisco Symphony. Warriors Owner and CEO Joe Lacob and Warriors President and Chief Operating Officer Rick Welts joined San Francisco Mayor London Breed for today’s press conference event as well. For a video of today’s press conference, CLICK HERE.

“Bringing together Metallica and San Francisco Symphony 20 years later for our first event at Chase Center is going to be an incredible and unique performance for the Bay Area,” said Warriors President and Chief Operating Officer Rick Welts. “This announcement is one of many of the must-see acts we’ll have as we continue to add a variety and diversity of shows to Chase Center’s calendar.”

“This is beyond exciting on so many fronts,” said Metallica’s Lars Ulrich. “The fact that San Francisco is finally getting a much needed world-class arena, the fact that Metallica get to be part of the opening celebration, the fact that we get to revisit S&M 20 years later, and the fact that we get to share the stage not only with the San Francisco Symphony once again, but with the legend himself, MTT, as he kicks off his final year as music director here in San Francisco. This is mind-blowingly awesome… bring it on ASAP!!!”

“The San Francisco Symphony is delighted to be a part of the Chase Center’s opening week, and to perform once again with Metallica to recreate the magic of the historic S&M concerts,” said San Francisco Symphony Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas. “I’m happy to join with my friends in Metallica to make this an extraordinary only-in-San Francisco music event.”

The original S&M concerts were performed by Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony conducted by the late Michael Kamen In spring of 1999 at the Berkeley Community Theatre. The S&M album, was released later that year, winning a Best Rock Instrumental Performance GRAMMY for its version of “The Call of Ktulu.” The S&M2 concert will feature the first live performances of these arrangements in 20 years, plus the first ever Metallica/San Francisco Symphony renditions of songs written and released since the original S&M, with new orchestral charts by Bruce Coughlin.

The first presale event begins on Tuesday, March 19 at 9:00 a.m. exclusively for Metallica Fan Club members, with an additional presale event at 12:00 p.m. for Chase cardholders. Additional presale events will be held for Chase Center Membership members on Wednesday, March 20 at 12:00 p.m. and for Warriors Season Ticket Priority Wait List members on Thursday, March 21 at 9:00 a.m. Tickets will be made available to the general public on Friday, March 22 at 10:00 a.m. Fans will be able to purchase tickets by visiting chasecenter.com.

“Wasted Youth” is the third single off Jenny’s highly anticipated forthcoming album, following on the heels of “Red Bull & Hennessy” and album opener “Heads Gonna Roll,” instantaneously praised by critics:

“Shows Why She’s A Rock Legend…a lovely demonstration of her poetic songwriting and skill as a composer, pianist, and vocalist.”—UPROXX

“a knowing, incisive triumph of old-school singer-songwriter pop…The lyrics are vintage Jenny Lewis, specific and evocative and glamorous”—STEREOGUM

“stunning…The piano-driven tune moves with a steady, country swing, while a swooning string arrangement and a blown-out organ solo provide differing, but equally affecting, forms of texture. Lewis delivers yet another mesmerizing vocal performance, helped along by her knife-sharp lyrics”—ROLLING STONE

As previously reported, the video was directed by Hill, filmed at locations on New York’s Upper West Side including Zabar’s and Barney Greengrass.

The “Sunflower” clip stars Ezra Koenig and Steve Lacy (who features on the song), with surprise cameos including Jerry Seinfeld and Fab 5 Freddy.

“Sunflower” is half of the second pair of songs to be released in advance of Vampire Weekend’s forthcoming Father of the Bride, which will be released May 3rd on Columbia Records. Pre-orders are available now across digital platforms. FRESHEN UP U.S. TOUR 2019

SECOND LAS VEGAS SHOW ADDED BY POPULAR DEMAND

FRIDAY, JUNE 28
T-MOBILE ARENA IN LAS VEGAS

TICKETS ON SALE TO THE PUBLIC MONDAY, MARCH 18 AT 10AM

EGYPT STATION OUT NOW ON CAPITOL RECORDS

© MPL Communications Ltd // Photographer: MJ Kim

Due to overwhelming demand for tickets to his previously announced June 29 show at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Paul McCartney has confirmed a second night at the arena to take place Friday, June 28.

Tickets for the newly added show will be on sale to the public on Monday, March 18 at 10AM.

The June 28 Las Vegas show is the latest addition to the U.S. leg of Paul’s Freshen Up Tour, his first extended stateside run since the One On One Tour that played to some two million fans around the world. Freshen Up kicked off following the release of Paul’s No. 1 charting album, Egypt Station, released September 7, 2018 on Capitol Records to stellar reviews. Rolling Stone raved, “Macca keeps adding new gems to his songbook, with nothing to prove except he’s the only genius who can do this…And, oh yeah — in his spare time, he happens to still be the greatest live performer on Earth,” while Entertainment Weekly described the album as “the still-vital life force of a superstar who has been there and everywhere and is glad just to be here now.”

The Paul McCartney live experience is everything any music lover could ever want from a show: nearly three hours nightly of the greatest moments from the last 50+ years of music, dozens of songs from Paul’s solo, Wings, and of course, The Beatles catalogues that have formed the soundtracks of our lives.

Merrie Land (“… a masterpiece.”– Album Of The Year, SUNDAY TIMES) was written during the current period in which the UK is preparing to leave the European Union, creating a reluctant good-bye letter, a series of observations and reflections on Britishness. The Truce of Twilight holds a mirror to the complex state of Britain, asking “Look what we have done…”

NOTES TO EDITORS:

November 2018 saw the release of Merrie Land, the second album from The Good, The Bad & The Queen, a band comprising of Damon Albarn, Paul Simonon, Tony Allen and Simon Tong.

Following an eleven-year hiatus since their eponymous debut, the four musical storytellers returned with Merrie Land, self-released on Studio 13 and produced by Tony Visconti and The Good, The Bad & The Queen.

The Good, The Bad & The Queen began life as the acclaimed 2007 album of the same name, a heartfelt tribute to London described by The Observer in a 5-star review as –“One of the most surprising and magical records for which Damon Albarn has ever been responsible”. The record traced a journey from the English music hall tradition to West Africa and Afrobeat, zigzagging through the West Indies and its reggae and dub, back to England and London’s punk scene, all the while taking in a strand of British beat music from the ’50s right through to Britpop. The result was a record specific to a place and mood but with a background that was geographically wide-ranging.
