Live Nation is excited to confirm that U2 will bring their acclaimed Joshua Tree Tour to New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Singapore and South Korea later this year.

The band broke the news directly to fans via Twitter. See https://twitter.com/U2

Following the highly successful 2017 tour in celebration of the band’s classic album, The Joshua Tree Tour 2019 will see the band make a much anticipated return to New Zealand and Australia for the first time since the record-shattering U2 360° Tour in 2010, as well as the first Tokyo shows since the Vertigo Tour in 2006. The Joshua Tree Tour 2019 will also bring U2 to Singapore and Seoul – for the first time ever – with what promises to be very special concerts from “the biggest band in the world” (The Guardian).

Special guest Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds is confirmed as support for the dates in New Zealand and Australia with Noel saying, “We, NGHFB, are beside ourselves. The Joshua Tree 2017 Tour was some of the most fun we ever had. It will be both an honour and a pleasure to share the stage with our friends and comrades once again. It’s gonna be a ripper!!!!!”.

Bono said “It’s only taken me 30 years to learn how to sing these songs and it’s great to be able to say that I’ve finally caught up with the band. Our audience has given the Joshua Tree a whole new life on this tour. Doing these shows has been very special for us, a lot of emotion… From the despair of how relevant some of the dark songs still are, to the joy, pure fun of the staging… it’s quite a ride. And now we get to do it all over again. Auckland, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Sydney, Tokyo, Singapore, Seoul… We’re coming for you”.

“We really, REALLY wanted to bring The Joshua Tree to New Zealand, Australia and Asia” added The Edge. “We promised we would and finally, now we can say that we will see you in November… It’s going to feel like a homecoming and we are very excited”.

The Joshua Tree Tour 2019 kicks off in Auckland on 8th November and will visit Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth, before moving on to Singapore, Tokyo and Seoul. Tickets for the NZ/AU shows go on sale on Tuesday 11th June 2019 (times vary per city). U2.com subscribers will have first opportunity to purchase tickets starting Tuesday 4th June through Thursday 6th June with a 4 ticket limit (see www.U2.com for details).

In a first for any artist performing in New Zealand and Australia, and to ensure fans have the best access, stadium floor tickets for all the band’s NZ/AU shows will be paperless with delivery via mobile devices 72 hours prior to the applicable show. There will be an 8 ticket limit for general public sales.

In Japan reservations for U2.com subscribers will begin on Tuesday 4th June. Pre-orders via PIA and ePLUS begin Friday 14th June, and general sale for both performances will begin Saturday 20th July.  There will be a 4 ticket limit for subscribers and an 8 ticket limit for public sales.

In Seoul, the ticketing presale for U2.com subscribers will begin on Monday 10th June with tickets on general sale Wednesday 12th June. There will be a 4 ticket limit for subscribers and an 8 ticket limit for public sales.

About The Joshua Tree Tour:
The Joshua Tree Tour is a celebration of the original album and tour of the same name undertaken by U2 in 1987 and features the complete album played in sequence along with a selection of highlights from U2’s extensive catalogue of songs. The innovative staging includes a specially commissioned series of haunting and evocative films from Dutch photographer, film-maker  and longtime collaborator Anton Corbijn – whose iconic photography accompanied the original recording – in brilliant 8k resolution on a 200 x 45 foot cinematic screen, the largest high-res LED screen ever used in a touring show.

The Joshua Tree Tour 2017, produced by Live Nation Global Touring, opened to rave reviews in Vancouver, Canada in May 2017 – the first of 20 sold out stadium dates across North America. The sold out Eureopean run kicked off in London’s Twickenham Stadium on 8th July and saw the Dublin band return home to play to 78,000 fans in Croke Park, almost 30 years to the day after they played the legendary Dublin venue on the original Joshua Tree tour. The band hit the road again that September, taking in dates in Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile and São Paulo, as well as a historic first ever visit by U2 to Bogotá, Colombia for an unforgettable show at the city’s Estadio El Campin. Having played to over 2.7 million fans in just 51 shows across North and South America, the UK and Europe, and Mexico in 6 months, The Joshua Tree Tour 2017 was the most successful tour of the year.

About The Joshua Tree album:
Released to universal acclaim on 9th March 1987 and featuring hit singles “With Or Without You”,“I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” and “Where The Streets Have No Name”, The Joshua Tree went to #1 in the U.K, Ireland and around the world, selling in excess of 25 million albums, and catapulting Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr “… from heroes to superstars” (Rolling Stone).

Time Magazine put U2 on its cover in April 1987, proclaiming them “Rock’s Hottest Ticket” in a defining year for the band that saw their arena dates roll into stadium shows to accommodate escalating demand – setting them on course to become one of the greatest live acts in the world today.  The 12 months that followed saw the band create now-iconic moments: the traffic-stopping Grammy Award-winning music video on the roof of a Los Angeles liquor store, winning a BRIT Award and two Grammys – including Album of the Year – their first of 22 received to date, distinguishing U2 as the most awarded rock band in Grammy history; as well as a triumphant return home for four unforgettable shows in Belfast, Dublin and Cork in the summer of 1987.

U2’s fifth studio album The Joshua Tree was produced by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, and featured iconic artwork which cemented the career of photographer and director Anton Corbijn. Recording took place in Dublin at Windmill Lane Studios and Danesmoate, the house which subsequently became bassist Adam Clayton’s home.

“The title befits a record that concerns itself with resilience in the face of utter social and political desolation…The Joshua Tree is an appropriate response to these times, and a picture bleaker than any U2 has ever painted: a vision of blasted hopes, pointless violence and anguish… Music of great sadness but also of unutterable compassion, acceptance and calm.” – Rolling Stone, 1987

BEASTIE BOYS: ILL COMMUNICATION TURNS 25

BEASTIE BOYS: ILL COMMUNICATION TURNS 25

STILL ILL Mini-Doc Live HERE

Debuting at #1 upon its May 1994 release, Beastie Boys’ fourth album was an unstoppable force, pervading every aspect of pop culture. Its charge to the top of the charts was led by “Sabotage” and its legendary Spike Jonze/Nathanial Hornblower ’70s TV police drama tribute, as ROLLING STONE dubbed Ill Communication 1994’s “soundtrack for summer.” Crowds and critics alike were floored by highlights “Sure Shot,” “Root Down” and “Get It Together,” as a VIBE (RIP)—in the magazine’s first cover story on a white artist–hailed Beastie Boys as “perhaps the most consistently innovative musicians to emerge out of hip hop.” It was a claim that Ill Communication has justified for years to come, and 25 years later Ill Communication’s impact has resounded with generation after generation.

Surviving members Adam “Adrock” Horovitz and Michael “Mike D” Diamond sat down and reflected on the making of the album with Amazon Music’s Nathan Brackett.

The documentary also features archival footage and commentary from musical collaborators Mario Caldato Jr. and “Money” Mark Nishita.

PAUL McCARTNEY: DECADES-SPANNING LIVE ALBUM MILESTONE REISSUES

PAUL McCARTNEY
DECADES-SPANNING “LIVE” ALBUM MILESTONE REISSUES

AMOEBA GIG
PAUL IS LIVE
CHOBA B CCCP
WINGS OVER AMERICA

TO BE RELEASED JULY 12, 2019 VIA MPL/CAPITOL/UMe

Following last night’s kick-off of this year’s North American leg of his record-breaking FRESHEN UP Tour, PAUL McCARTNEY adds to his Summer of LIVE: Paul has confirmed updated releases of four albums capturing performances spanning from his 1975-1976 return to U.S. arenas with Wings to his intimate 2007 set at Amoeba records in Los Angeles. The albums — Amoeba Gig, Paul Is Live, Choba B CCCP, Wings Over America — will be released July 12, 2019 via MPL/Capitol/UMe digitally, on CD and on both black and limited edition color vinyl.

AMOEBA GIG:
Amoeba Gig is the first full length commercial release of Paul’s surprise free concert at Hollywood’s Amoeba Music on June 27, 2007. To date only four songs have seen wide release as the Amoeba’s Secret EP, two of which were nominated for Grammy Awards in 2008: “That Was Me” for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and “I Saw Her Standing There” for Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance. A few years later in November 2012, an extended 12-song excerpt of the Amoeba show titled Live in Los Angeles – The Extended Set was made available free to PaulMcCartney.com premium members for a limited period. And come July 12, 2019, a full 21-song recording documenting possibly the most intimate L.A. show Paul has ever played will be made available to the public for the first time. The millions of people not among the luckier than lucky few hundred rubbing elbows with the likes of Ringo Starr and Woody Harrelson during that once in a lifetime in-store set will be able to experience those performances of Beatles classics “The Long And Winding Road,” “I’ll Follow The Sun” and “I’ve Got A Feeling,” Flaming Pie’s “Calico Skies,” plus Carl Perkins’ “Matchbox,” Jan Garber’s “Baby Face” and an emotional rendition of “Here Today.” Additionally, the LP will include an exclusive soundcheck recording of “Coming Up.”

Amoeba Gig has been newly remixed by Paul’s engineer Steve Orchard and will be available in configurations including CD, 2 x 180g black vinyl, and limited edition color vinyl (LP1 – clear, LP2 – hazy amber transparent).

PAUL IS LIVE:
Recorded during the U.S. and Australian swings of the tour in support of 1993’s Off The Ground, Paul Is Live is Paul’s fifth live album. Originally released that same year, the album is famous for the multiple meanings and clues embedded in its title and cover art, all of which play on the “Paul Is Dead” conspiracy/hoax. In addition to a wealth of Wings and Beatles classics, covers of Roy Brown’s “Good Rockin’ Tonight” and Leiber and Stoller’s “Kansas City” and more, Paul Is Live also offers a peek behind the curtain: Three songs improvised on the spot and exclusive to the album, all recorded during rehearsals in various locations over the course of the tour.

Paul Is Live has been newly remastered at Abbey Road Studios and will be available in configurations including CD, 2 x 180g black vinyl, and limited edition color vinyl (LP1 – opaque baby blue, LP2 – plush peach white opaque).

CHOBA B CCCP:
The live-in-studio Choba B CCCP (Russian for “Back In The USSR”) was released in the Soviet Union in 1988, making Paul the first Western artist to issue an album exclusively for that market. In a conscious decision to get back to his roots, Paul spontaneously spent two days covering his favorite hits from the 1950s. The sessions produced 22 songs in total (and one of the outtakes being a version of The Beatles’ “I Saw Her Standing There”). Choba B CCCP was a deeply personal album and a way to acknowledge fans who had supported him and The Beatles since the start. “When I was very young I asked my dad if people wanted peace,” Paul explained at the time. “He said to me, ‘Yes, people everywhere want peace – it’s usually politicians that cause trouble.’ It always seemed to me that the way The Beatles’ music was admired in the USSR tended to prove his point, that people the world over have a great deal in common. In releasing this record exclusively in the Soviet Union, I extend the hand of peace and friendship to the people of Russia.” Choba B CCCP was released in the rest of the world following the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union.

Choba B CCCP has been newly remastered at Abbey Road Studios and will be reissued as the original 11-track Russian release. It will be available in configurations including CD, 180g black vinyl, and limited edition opaque yellow vinyl.

WINGS OVER AMERICA:
Rare #1-charting triple live album, Wings Over America is a document of one the most sophisticated and dazzling rock shows of the 1970s or any decade. Paul and the band would eventually perform to more than 600,000 people at 31 shows in the US and Canada, ending with three historic nights at The Forum in Los Angeles. It’s no exaggeration to say that the excitement that greeted Paul McCartney & Wings (Linda McCartney, Joe English, Denny Laine and Jimmy McCulloch) in the spring of 1976 as they embarked on what would become their one and only North American tour was overwhelming. Having released four consecutive chart topping albums — Red Rose Speedway, Band on the Run, Venus and Mars and At The Speed Of Sound – not to mention 1973’s Academy Award-winning James Bond theme “Live and Let Die” – Wings’ career was in full flight… and as Paul’s first U.S. tour since The Beatles, the sheer joy of both the band and its fans were off the charts throughout the 90 hours of recordings distilled into this triple album. Wings Over America was last reissued in 2013 as part of the Paul McCartney Archive Collection series winning the Grammy Award for Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package.

Wings Over America will be available in configurations including double CD, 3 x 180g triple vinyl, and limited edition color vinyl (LP1 – transparent red, LP2 – transparent green, LP3 – transparent blue) both come with original souvenir poster.

Jenny has recently confirmed a handful of new dates, including both weekends of ACL Fest and headlining shows across the south. Be sure not to miss these incredible live performances that have critics raving:

“a terrific hometown show…underscored what makes Lewis so timelessly appealing…simultaneously timeless and modern, little portraits of storytelling wrapped in a sheen of country, rock, soul and gospel…Lewis thrilled the adoring crowd” —OC REGISTER

“It was completely dark outside by the time Jenny Lewis appeared on the Edisto Stage Saturday night, but her person was bright enough to light the entire Riverfront Park—and not just because she donned a floor-length sequined dress. The songs on her stunning new album On The Line are positively radiant. Each glows and gleams with a kind of glam only Lewis can pull off, and watching her perform those dazzling tunes—from the searing rock ‘n’ roll of star single “Red Bull & Hennessy” to the hang-loose declarations of “Wasted Youth”—was further proof On The Line may be her best solo effort to date.”       —PASTE (Best Moments of High Water Festival 2019

“Anyone else still fawning over Jenny Lewis this morning? Wearing a sequined pink mermaid-esque dress with faux fur cuffs, Jenny Lewis appears on a pastel platform like a dream…While Lewis performs some of the album’s biggest bangers, like  “Heads Gonna Roll” and “Red Bull and Hennessy,” she bestows older favorites, too, like “Just One of the Guys” and “See Fernando,” all with the swagger of a woman who knows she’s something to fucking celebrate.” —CHARLESTON CITY PAPER

VAMPIRE WEEKEND: FATHER OF THE BRIDE DEBUTS AT #1

VAMPIRE WEEKEND

FATHER OF THE BRIDE DEBUTS AT #1

Biggest Sales Week for a Rock Band in 2019

Top Selling Vinyl of 2019

North American Tour Begins This Weekend

A veritable feast of music
—Billboard

One of the most ~important~ bands of the 21st century… With Father of the Bride, their fourth album, the group has expanded itself and the conception of what a band can be.
—GQ

The band’s long-awaited fourth album also just became the frontrunner for best album of 2019
—New York (Vulture)

Sonically eclectic and lyrically profound… the indie-rock band’s most affecting material to date.
—People

A sheer delight in craft and sound.
—Rolling Stone

Vampire Weekend returns as the best indie band of their generation… the album proves that they’re still better than most, if not all, of the other artists of that era… More important, the band has a genius-level songwriter in Koenig
—USA Today

An almost universally radiant offering… an album that could soundtrack an afternoon picnic or be used as fodder for a doctorate thesis on songwriting. It’s a beautifully realized cipher in an age of unsatisfying answers.
—Variety

Vampire Weekend’s rapturously received pre-release run of events—including multiple TV appearances, and a New York State Tour including a surprise pop-up performance in Washington Square Park drawing thousands of fans and ending in a 56-song all-day musical marathon–has yielded its reward: the band’s long-awaited fourth album Father of the Bride, released May 3rd on Spring Snow/Columbia Records, has entered the U.S. chart at #1.

The third Vampire Weekend album in a row to reach #1 on the Billboard 200, Father of the Bride’s first week tally of 138,000 is both the year’s biggest sales week for a rock act and the highest single week sales of the Grammy-winning band’s career. Nearly 20,000 of the album’s first week sales were vinyl, putting the LP at #1 on the vinyl chart by a large margin as well as the top selling vinyl of the year—not to mention #1 debuts on the Album Sales and Internet Sales charts. The album is available to purchase or stream here.    Father of the Bride’s release was also supported by a Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon appearance featuring special guests Haim that resulted in a rare two songs airing over two consecutive weeks (the second song will air this Friday, May 17) and a Jimmy KimmelLive performance hailed by Stereogum as “further evidence that the new songs will sound great when the band hits the road this summer.”

The Father of the Bride North American Tour begins the weekend of May 16-19 with a headlining set at the Hangout Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama. The band’s U.S. dates currently extend through an October 8-9 two-night stand at Red Rocks in Colorado, and include Vampire Weekend’s most ambitious hometown date ever: a September 6th in-the-round performance for 18,000 fans at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

ST. VINCENT: THE STORY BEHIND ACTOR

May 2019

The story behind Actor

The internet told me that my second record turned 10 last weekend.

I experience time as elastic. I know there are scientific theories regarding this topic that are 1) well known and 2) fascinating but irrelevant for the purpose of this brief (and metaphorical) sentiment.

So, I experience time, I imagine, like most people, as elastic. Makes sense, in its way. As musicians, all we have to get best at is timing. Macro and micro.  When to sing that lyric. When to play (or more importantly, NOT play) that note.  Where to feel that big and little “one.”  When the song should keep going. And when the song should end.

But 10 years, however one has experienced them, have gone by since I put out a much labored-over record (some of this suffering was avoidable, but I was unaware of how to ford the river at the time without breaking the leg or getting dysentery…)

I remember having deep and lengthy conversations about 80’s 4AD and Tones on Tail and late Scott Walker records (the Mussolini and beating meat stuff!) with a producer whose work I admired and decided to work with and who convinced me to work on tape.

Turns out, neither of us really knew how to work on tape. Me, being of the burgeoning DIY digital generation with songs a work in progress, used to moving all the puzzle pieces around and he, having no patience for anything that wasn’t his burgeoning polyamorous marriage or recreating Talk Talk’s Laughing Stock. (Genius record and reference.  But likely not made with an abusive father figure LITERALLY directing Mark Hollis’s every move.)

I’d spent an incredible amount of time making “no hair on its head shall be disturbed” small ensemble arrangements, brutally, on tape.

As it became clear that this process with the idealist-cum-emotional-fascist* was not going to end fruitfully, I took my reels and reels of tape to my friend Johnny C.  Johnny told me some of the songs sounded like outtakes from the Lion King on Broadway.  (God bless, Julie Taymor, but not a compliment in this case…).  I was lost. I had all kinds of words and melodies but was so beaten up by the other process that i   didn’t know how to tie them with these pristine moments.

He told me to go home and write a song in a night. So I wrote “Actor Out of Work” at my mom’s house in my childhood bedroom.  I felt like a fraud. I felt like people were frauds. I wanted to be hit. I wanted to hit.

Some mid-morning Starbucks-determination at a bizarre Plano studio in a strip mall and a splash of Here Come the Warm Jets and suddenly we had a song.

Johnny didn’t like the studio gear. It reeked of a little more than a little money but definitely little taste.  But we made it work.

We talked about Ramones and Iggy songs and late 70’s guitars plugged straight into consoles and blown up by compressors.  We talked about Suicide drum beats.  We mocked the giant bean bag chair which served as a couch which was someone’s idea of what musicians do:  Lie around. Prostrate. While inspiration gets stoned and says he might strike a little later, he just has some shit to do… (u up?). No. You’re not up.

And anyway, Like eating, I prefer to stand when I “create.”

I remember recording the piano on “The Party”. Painstakingly. As I was and am somehow always confused as where my hands should go. Sometimes a gift. Sometimes a liability. But luckily, never a thoroughly modern #metoo. (Zing!)

Piece by piece, Johnny and I went through and completely reworked every song and idea.  Lots of Hunky’s veggie burgers and Subway sandwiches and talking. Talking sincere. Talking shit. Making each other laugh with stories about growing up. About Texas. About growing up in Texas.

I remember finishing the record. The relief and panic.  And having my mama drive me to the DFW airport immediately afterward, because I was meant to play a few shows in Australia. (Being requested in Australia felt like a cultural coup. Yet after recording, I felt so strange and raw. And then I had to fly across the world in steerage to be another breed — a performer of a person.  When I wasn’t sure what person I was after finishing this album.)

There is no time to process during process. As Joni Mitchell sang, you’re just “living on nerves and feelings” before sensing you have done something. And you hope people will hear it. And hear you. And hear themselves. In the songs;  I was the empty swimming pool. I was the coward who wanted an iron spine. I was the kid hiding under the bed from a predator. I was the televangelist selling lies but spreading hope. I was the ashtray with the stubbed out cigarette waiting to be cleared by the beleaguered late night bar staff.  So were you.  You were everything.  I was just the same. But brand new. I wanted to be if not free, something just a little closer to it.

I haven’t listened to that record in a while. I have always likened listening to older work to looking at junior high year book photos.  If one is lucky, one can muster compassion for one’s younger self. Recognize that time is elastic. Notes are elastic. Lyrics elastic. Could have been anything.  Any songs, any ideas at all, anyone at that time.  But it was those songs and those ideas and that process and that person.  And I am (humbly) proud of it.  And so happy that Actor made it to the ears and hearts it did.

Love,

AC

Now in post-production, the as yet untitled Led Zeppelin documentary, directed by Bernard MacMahon, celebrates the world’s best-selling rock band on their fiftieth anniversary. The documentary traces the journeys of the four members through the music scene of the 1960s, their meeting in the summer of 1968 for a rehearsal that will change the future of rock, and culminates in 1970 when their second album knocks The Beatles off the top of the charts and they become the number one band in the world.

With brand new interviews of Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and John Paul Jones, as well as rare archival interviews with the late John Bonham, this documentary will be the first of its kind; the Led Zeppelin story told through the words of the men that lived it, with no outside voices or conjecture. Featuring never before seen archive film and photographs, state of the art audio transfers of the band’s music, as well as the music that shaped their sound, this documentary will be the definitive telling of the birth of the world’s biggest selling rock band. It is the first and only time the band have participated in a documentary in fifty years.

Jimmy Page: “When I saw everything Bernard had done on the remarkable achievement that is American Epic, I knew he would be qualified to tell our story.”

Robert Plant: “Seeing Will Shade, and so many other important early American musicians, brought to life on the big screen in American Epic inspired me to contribute to a very interesting and exciting story.”

John Paul Jones: “The time was right for us to tell our own story for the first time in our own words, and I think that this film will really bring that story to life.”
