BEASTIE BOYS CELEBRATE 30 YEARS OF ILL COMMUNICATION

BEASTIE BOYS
CELEBRATE 30 YEARS OF ILL COMMUNICATION
LIMITED EDITION 3LP DELUXE VINYL & CASSETTE OUT JULY 26

Originally released 30 years ago today on May 31, 1994, Ill Communication was much more than the record that returned Beastie Boys to #1 on the Billboard 200. In short order, the fourth album from Michael “Mike D” Diamond, Adam “Adrock” Horovitz and Adam “MCA” Yauch would become a multi-platinum juggernaut that pervaded every aspect of pop culture. Ill Communication‘s charge to global domination was led by “Sabotage” and its unforgettable Spike Jonze/Nathanial Hornblower-directed tribute to ’70s cop shows, as Rolling Stone dubbed the album 1994’s “soundtrack for summer.” Fans and critics alike were equally and instantly floored by hip hop highlights like the opening “Sure Shot,” the classic Jimmy Smith homage “Root Down” and the Q-Tip collaboration “Get It Together,” while a Vibe cover story hailed Beastie Boys as “perhaps the most consistently innovative musicians to emerge out of hip hop.” It was a claim that Ill Communication continues to back up, as the album’s infectious sprawl enthralls multiple generations of listeners. From household name hits to sublime instrumentals (“Sabrosa,” “Ricky’s Theme”) to hardcore punk workouts (“Tough Guy,” “Heart Attack Man”) and realms beyond (“Bodhisattva Vow,” “Shambala”), Ill Communication has never stopped growing in stature and impact.

Grand Royal, Capitol Records and UMe are proud to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Ill Communication with the July 26 release of two limited edition versions of this Beastie Boys opus:

* A 3LP Deluxe Edition that resurrects a rare version of the album originally released as a limited run in 2009. Long out-of-print and sought after by fans and collectors, the Ill Communication 30th anniversary vinyl edition features lenticular cover art and includes a third LP with 12 bonus tracks (featuring rarities including a live version of “The Maestro” from 1992’s Check Your Head, “Mullet Head,” and ten more remixes, B-sides and assorted oddities), all housed in a rigid slipcase and pressed on 180g vinyl.

* A limited edition cassette of the original album, marking the first time in decades Ill Communication will be available in the format.

So fire up the turntable and dust off that Walkman, and join in the celebration of 30 years of Ill Communication with Beastie Boys and the album’s supporting cast of Mario Caldato Jr. (who co-produced the record with the band), Money Mark, Eric Bobo, Amery “AWOL” Smith, Eugene Gore, Q-Tip and Biz Markie. Because you can’t, you won’t and you don’t stop…

AMYL & THE SNIFFERS: “U SHOULD NOT BE DOING THAT” / “FACTS” NEW SINGLE OUT NOW

NEW SINGLE AND VIDEO OUT NOW

US Tour to Kick Off July 13

Amy Taylor, Dec Martens, Gus Romer and Bryce Wilson, collectively known as Amyl and The Sniffers, have unleashed the incendiary new standalone single “U Should Not Be Doing That” / “Facts” via B2B Records / Virgin Music Group.

Recorded with Nick Launay (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and accompanied by an appropriately raucous video featuring Steven Ogg, the first new music from the Melbourne, Australia foursome since its 2021 sophomore album Comfort To Me, “U Should Not Be Doing That” and “Facts” represent nothing short of a quantum leap. Taylor’s unmistakable vocals—which once moved Pitchfork to crown her “punk’s reigning snarl champion”—cut through with newfound range and confidence, while Martens, Romer and Wilson refine their magnetic proto-punk din to incorporate a radically expanded palette of sonic elements—spanning the AC/DC-esque rhythmic stomp of “U Should Not Be Doing That” to the Stooges-by-way-of-Black Flag guitar pyrotechnics of “Facts,” and beyond.

“Lyrically they’re both pretty self-explanatory. ‘U Should Not Be Doing That’ makes me laugh, but it’s also in a way poking fun at the shock that people still feel at a little bit of skimpy clothing, and the bitchy high school way that the music community still is (yes I’m talking to you random 40 year old metalheads sitting around a table doing lines and bitching about a 28 year old chick in a band for wearing shorts and ‘selling out’) but it mainly makes me laugh. It’s unconscious and meant nothing at the time of writing it but now I think it’s a comedic way of rubbing the dog’s nose in its own dog piss after it wee’d on your favorite rug or something.” —Amy Taylor

The “U Should Not Be Doing That” / “Facts” single is available now across digital platforms, with a physical 7″ release to follow on June 28.

Come summer, Amyl and The Sniffers will be bringing the live experience that The New Yorker noted “left audiences slack-jawed” to a haphazard mix of North American venues ranging from headlining club and theater gigs to stadium shows as special guests of Foo Fighters. The tour kicks off July 13 at Day In Day Out in Seattle, criss-crossing the continent with stops including New York’s Citi Field, Boston’s Fenway Park and headlining dates dotting the Northeast, Midwest and more, before coming to close with a two-night blowout at the Fonda Theater in Los Angeles.

Trafalgar Releasing today launched the global trailer for Ghost’s debut film RITE HERE RITE NOW. As previously announced, the film will premiere in cinemas worldwide on June 20 & 22 as tickets go on sale today, available here. Additional screenings may vary by territory. Shot over the course of GHOST’s two sold-out shows at Los Angeles’ hallowed Kia Forum, RITE HERE RITE NOW fully immerses viewers in the technicolor melodrama of the vaunted live ritual that has helped to propel Sweden’s foremost theatrical rock export to GRAMMY-winning, chart-topping, arena-headlining status the world over.

RITE HERE RITE NOW: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will be released worldwide on July 26 via Loma Vista Recordings. A fitting 18-song complement to GHOST’s debut feature film, the band’s first ever original soundtrack will be available on all formats (digital, CD, 2xLP). Pre-orders are live now here, and include the soundtrack’s live version of “Absolution,” captured at that now-legendary two-night stand at the Forum, as an instant grat track available here and on YouTube here.

RITE HERE RITE NOW is, however, so much more than a concert movie. GHOST’s debut feature film combines live performance from the two-night finale of the band’s RE-IMPERATOUR U.S.A. 2023 with a narrative story that picks up plot threads from the band’s long-running Chapters series. The result is an utterly unique phantasmagorical blend: Flesh and bone renditions of favorites from all five of GHOST’s albums as well as the RIAA platinum-certified “Mary On A Cross” and more are interwoven with the silver screen debuts of a few faces familiar to the band’s legions of fans—all interacting behind the scenes with GHOST’s Papa Emeritus IV, as his future and fate lay in the hands of the Ministry.

Whether you’re a devoted disciple looking to relive treasured memories of the GHOST live spectacle or among the curious uninitiated, RITE HERE RITE NOW will put you right there: putting your phones down and living in the moment—as a shadow of uncertainty looms—completely spellbound and in the thrall of this bombastic yet intimate cinematic portrait of GHOST.

The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to RITE HERE RITE NOW will be released via Loma Vista Recordings.

RITE HERE RITE NOW is directed by GHOST’s Tobias Forge and Alex Ross Perry and is produced by Popecorn Cinematic Pictures. Producers include Kristen Mulderig, Rick Sales, Craig Butta and Jonas Åkerlund.

About GHOST

Accumulating nearly 10 billion streams, GRAMMY-winning Swedish theatrical rock band and global sensation GHOST continues to bring the “euphoric spectacle” (ROLLING STONE) of its live shows to ever-growing crowds, most recently on last year’s triumphant RE-IMPERATOUR U.S.A. 2023, which hit more than two dozen North American cities before its two-night finale at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles. In March 2022, THE LOS ANGELES TIMES reported in a Calendar cover story that GHOST had “conquered metal and the charts” when its fifth album IMPERA debuted at #1 in a sweep of the U.S. album charts, entering the BILLBOARD 200 at #2 and bowing at #1 in the band’s native Sweden, Germany and Finland, while cracking the top 5 in another half dozen or more countries. Featuring “Spillways”—hailed as a “sweetly constructed rock tune” by THE NEW YORK TIMES and later reimagined with Joe Elliott of Def Leppard—and the GRAMMY-nominated “Call Me Little Sunshine,” GHOST’s fifth #1 at Active Rock radio—IMPERA moved ROLLING STONE to remark, “GHOST predicted the pandemic, now the metal band is foretelling the fall of empires.” The album presented the most current and topical GHOST subject matter to date set against a darkly colorful melodic backdrop making IMPERA a listen like no other—yet unmistakably, quintessentially GHOST. Having closed out 2022 by cracking the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time, with the RIAA platinum-certified “Mary on a Cross,” as well as IMPERA winning Favorite Rock Album at the American Music Awards and Best Rock Album of the Year at the iHeart Radio Music Awards, GHOST unveiled PHANTOMIME, a five-song covers EP including the version of Iron Maiden’s “Phantom of the Opera” that earned the band its fifth GRAMMY nomination. GHOST’s seemingly limitless ambition will soon take the band to the silver screen with the June 2024 theatrical premiere of the feature film RITE HERE RITE NOW.

As The Beatles captured the hearts of millions, Paul McCartney captured it all on his Pentax film camera. Paul McCartney Photographs 1963–64: Eyes of the Storm takes visitors inside the 1963–64 frenzy of Beatlemania, as the band’s first U.S. tour skyrocketed them to global fame. More than 250 of McCartney’s photographs, recently rediscovered in his archives, reveal his singular vantage point at the center of this whirlwind of attention and adoration—illuminating both the historical, and the personal, moments McCartney and his bandmates experienced together. First on view at the National Portrait Gallery in London, England, the exhibition makes its New York debut at the Brooklyn Museum, opening May 3, 2024, supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies.

“Since first arriving in New York in February 1964, Paul McCartney has built a strong, everlasting connection to the city. His vibrant photographs from The Beatles’ first visit capture the energy of the city, the excitement of the American fans, and the frenzy of the band’s status as celebrities. Yet the images also record The Beatles’ fun and delight with each other. Through McCartney’s lens, we feel the intensity of being at the center of such extraordinary events,” says Catherine Futter, Director of Curatorial Affairs and Senior Curator of Decorative Arts.

In an immersive installation of photography, video clips, and archival material, Eyes of the Storm traces the period when The Beatles played concert halls in Liverpool and London and began to tour internationally, first to Paris and then to the United States. McCartney’s photographs convey the intensity of the band’s touring schedule in the U.S., as the Fab Four were swept from concerts to hotels to the road with rabid fans and paparazzi at their heels, from New York and Washington, DC, to Miami. The band’s arrival in New York signaled a turning point in popular culture, as their first televised performance on The Ed Sullivan Show was watched by around seventy three million people and launched The Beatles into superstardom.

McCartney’s explorations in photography reflect his commitment to both the musical and visual arts. The range of work, from portraiture and landscape photos to documentary images, reveals McCartney’s familiarity with the formal styles of early 1960s photography. References to New Wave, documentary filmmaking, and photojournalism can be found across the exhibition.

Eyes of the Storm not only showcases McCartney’s artistic versatility but also serves as a personal and historical archive. In addition to documenting the demands of touring and nonstop media attention, the photographs evoke an affectionate family album, picturing his fellow band members, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, at a time when their lives were changing irrevocably. The exhibition gives visitors a highly personal glimpse into an extraordinary time period of one of music’s enduring legends.

Born in Liverpool, England, Paul McCartney rose to prominence as a founding member of The Beatles. Throughout his lifetime, McCartney has played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of popular music and culture more broadly.

Paul McCartney Photographs 1963–64: Eyes of the Storm has been organized by the National Portrait Gallery, London, England, in collaboration with Paul McCartney. It is curated by Paul McCartney with Sarah Brown for MPL Communications and Rosie Broadley for the National Portrait Gallery. The presentation at the Brooklyn Museum is organized by Catherine Futter, Director of Curatorial Affairs and Senior Curator of Decorative Arts, and Jennie Tang, Executive Assistant to the Deputy Director of Art and the Director of Curatorial Affairs.

The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to RITE HERE RITE NOW will be released via Loma Vista Recordings. Pre-order launch and additional details will complement the film’s cinema on-sale date of May 9.

Tobias Forge explained:

“Over a decade ago when GHOST got signed to Loma Vista, Tom Whalley (owner and CEO) asked what the story of the band was.
He felt telling a story was vital in order to get new fans engaged.
I said that because we were a new ‘baby’ band and more importantly we were an ANONYMOUS baby band, there wasn’t really a compelling story to tell.
Not yet anyway.
But I told him that if he wanted a story, I could come up with one.
This film is the fruit of that conversation.”

Director Alex Ross Perry said “Collaborating with Tobias to expand the saga of GHOST into a feature film has been a wicked delight. This movie allowed us to be inspired by everything from silent horror to The Great Rock n’ Roll Swindle, from Ralph Bakshi to KISS Alive II. The influences were many, but above all, the ultimate goal was to make a one-of-a-kind feast not only for GHOST fans, but all lovers of the cinematic alchemy between rock spectacle and spooky delights.”

Kymberli Frueh, SVP of Programming and Content Acquisitions at Trafalgar Releasing, adds “The mystery, mystique, and musical style of GHOST has created such a dedicated allegiance to the band. Our cinemas provide the perfect immersive experience to unite fans as a community and experience GHOST’s elaborate performances with big screens and big sound.”

RITE HERE RITE NOW is produced by Popecorn Cinematic Pictures. Producers include Kristen Mulderig, Rick Sales, Craig Butta and Jonas Åkerlund.

NEW ALBUM ALL BORN SCREAMING OUT NOW

St. Vincent is on fire…Annie Clark…unleashes her broad range of art-rock gifts, from the crackling ember of her textured vocals to the raging infernos of swirling, epic orchestration.”–ASSOCIATED PRESS

“She retains her sharp edge as a songwriter while making the music sound exalting, inspiring, and thoroughly romantic…Clark incorporates Bond theme melodrama, Steely Dan-style prog, bouncy art pop and lechy industrial rock”–PITCHFORK

“..this is some of Annie Clark’s most satisfyingly urgent music yet.”–ROLLING STONE

“…a proper, career-spanning time capsule harboring the flourishes of her greatest eras. Lounge, noise rock, baroque, funk, chamber pop, electronica—it’s all here and orbiting each other…This album, from beginning to end, feels like one of her most authentic statements yet.”–PASTE

“…no pretense, no filter, no screen. It’s a joyous sound…wailing against the world not just in grief, but exultant and defiant…quintessentially St. Vincent.”–STEREOGUM

We don’t throw around the word ‘genius’ lightly, so when we say Annie Clark, known professionally as St. Vincent, is a genius, we damn well mean it.she proves there isn’t anywhere she can’t go musically…just might be Clark’s most raw and primal album yet. An exploration of life’s trials and tribulations and how loss and grief can put what really matters into perspective…Clark enters a new era, and we’re here for it.”–WHO WHAT WEAR

“…provides a perfect platform for St. Vincent’s many talents and will certainly be among the picks by many critics for the best albums of this year.”–GOLDMINE

ST. VINCENT: NEW SINGLE, “BIG TIME NOTHING,” OUT NOW

ST. VINCENT
“BIG TIME NOTHING”
THIRD ADVANCE TRACK FROM NEW ALBUM
ALL BORN SCREAMING OUT THIS FRIDAY, APRIL 26

Named Hottest Record in the World by BBC Radio 1’s Future Sounds

“Clark has eked out a singular space in music, occasionally intersecting with the mainstream but for the most part staying uncompromisingly countercultural.” – THE NEW YORK TIMES

“All Born Screaming is not the sound of St. Vincent becoming yet another character, but the sound of Annie Clark rediscovering herself… a pure, bold presentation of St. Vincent… It’s good to have her back.” – STEREOGUM

“Big Time Nothing,” the third song to be released in advance of St. Vincent’s feverishly anticipated All Born Screaming, is out now. Featuring a precarious balance of ennui and urgency underpinned by brainworm basslines, the newly unleashed track expands on the incendiary sonic palette of side one of the new album—forming a fiery trifecta with the “swaggering, stripped-down ball of energy” (FLOOD) that is “Flea” and the “volcanic buildup” (THE NEW YORK TIMES) of “Broken Man.”

The wait is over: With the June 14 release of One Hand Clapping, one of the most bootlegged live albums in musical history will finally receive a proper release. In August 1974, when Band on the Run was enjoying a seven-week consecutive #1 stint at the top of the UK album charts, Paul McCartney and Wings headed to Abbey Road Studios for the filming of a video documentary and possible live studio album – One Hand Clapping. Despite overwhelming demand for newly recorded material from the biggest band in the world at that time, One Hand Clapping was never officially released.

Filmed and recorded over four days and directed by David Litchfield, the release of One Hand Clapping is a historic moment for Paul McCartney fans. Over the years, various parts of One Hand Clapping have been bootlegged with varying degrees of success. Some of the material has also appeared on official McCartney releases. However, the June 14 release of One Hand Clapping, which features the original artwork designed for the project, including a TV sales brochure for the unreleased film at the time, is the first time the audio for the film—plus several additional songs recorded off-camera–have been officially issued.

One Hand Clapping showcased Wings‘ new line-up, fresh off their return from Nashville, where they recorded the classic single Junior’s Farm. Following the sudden departure of Denny Seiwell and Henry McCullough the previous year on the eve of recording the Wings masterpiece Band on the Run, Paul, Linda, and Denny Laine were now joined by guitarist Jimmy McCulloch and drummer Geoff Britton.  Additionally joining the band in the studio were orchestral arranger Del Newman and saxophonist Howie Casey, who had previously played with Paul in Hamburg and would go on to join the Wings touring band.

Opening with an instrumental jam that would become the One Hand Clapping theme song, the album features live-in-studio renditions of Wings mega-hits “Live and Let Die,” “Band on the Run,” “Jet,” “My Love,” “Hi, Hi, Hi,” “Junior’s Farm,” Paul’s much loved solo song “Maybe I’m Amazed,” reworked extracts of Beatles’ classics “Let It Be,” “The Long and Winding Road” and “Lady Madonna,” the Moody Blues hit “Go Now” with Denny Laine singing, and a Paul solo piano version of the Harry Akst/Benny  Davis Tin Pan Alley classic “Baby Face.”

One Hand Clapping will be released in multiple formats, including an online exclusive 2LP + 7” package featuring an exclusive vinyl single of previously unreleased solo performances recorded on the final day of the sessions in the backyard of Abbey Road studios. These include the unreleased track “Blackpool,” The Beatles’ iconic “Blackbird,” Wings B-side “Country Dreamer,” and cover versions of Eddie Cochran’s “Twenty Flight Rock” (the first song Paul played to John Lennon when they met in 1957) and Buddy Holly’s “Peggy Sue” and “I’m Gonna Love You Too.”One Hand Clapping serves as a celebration of the enduring legacy of Paul McCartney and Wings. It captured a moment when Wings had found and defined their signature sound – just as Paul had shaped popular culture the decade before with The Beatles, he was doing it once again in the 70s with Wings. This recording gives an insight into the inner workings of the band as they work and play together in the studio.  It also underscores Paul’s incredible talent as a live performer:  Fifty years on, Paul is still performing many of these songs in packed stadiums across the world.
