Gorillaz drummer added Russel“Song Machine is a whole new way of doing what we do. Gorillaz breaking the mold ‘cos the mold got old. World is moving faster than a supercharged particle, so we’ve gotta stay ready to drop. We don’t even know who’s stepping through the studio next. DESERT SESSIONS: “Easier Said Than Done” Video Out Now

DESERT SESSIONS

Release Video for “Easier Said Than Done”

Directed by Chapman Baehler

Joshua Homme’s Team of Crazed Collaborators Announce “The Bizarre Bazaar”, a Bi-Weekly Series of Desert Sessions Inspired Artwork Auctions for Charity with Limited Edition Quilt by Ben Venom.

Joshua Homme’s collaborative motley crew Desert Sessions return with the music video to “Easier Said Than Done”, from Vols. 11 & 12 (aka respectively Arrivederci Despair and Tightwads & Nitwits & Critics & Heels) (Matador). Directed by photographer-director Chapman Baehler, this nightmare vision contains fascist-humiliating watersports, pig-men ejaculating glitter, a little defenestration, some light immolation… and Joshua Homme on roller skates.

For further edification, just watch the video over and over until the next one.

The unique delight of Desert Sessions lies in unexpected collaborations between musicians who might otherwise never work together, and alongside the new video, Desert Sessions have teamed up with artists in other media including palm-painting, sculpture, jewelry, film-making, and, in this instance, quilting, to create one-of-a-kind pieces of art inspired by, and indelibly connected to — the music, for a series of charity auctions benefiting The Sweet Stuff Foundation. For the inaugural auction in this “Bizarre Bazaar,” hosted on a dedicated eBay page, acclaimed textile artist Ben Venom has created a 3′ X 3′ quilt expressing the sounds of Desert Sessions in fabric and thread:

“I describe my art as a collision between fine art, craft, and the fringes of society. Working with textiles, I contrast the often menacing and aggressive counterculture components of gangs, punk/metal music, and the occult with the comforts of domesticity. For the Crawling Death quilt, the fragility of the materials and their assaulting imagery are brought together in the form of a functional piece of art. This piece was made in collaboration with the Desert Sessions and it has been an honor to participate in the project.”

The auctions will continue with new Desert Sessions artwork and video content dropping every 2 weeks.

For more information on the Sweet Stuff Foundation go to https://www.thesweetstufffoundation.org/

Ending a 16-year hiatus since its last installment, Desert Sessions returned in October 2019 with the most ambitious entries to date in its expansive and elusive catalog. Vols. 11 & 12 were recorded (mostly) in December 2018 at Rancho De La Luna studios in Joshua Tree, CA, with Queens of the Stone Age founder and Desert Sessions ringleader/producer Joshua Homme enlisting a cast of players including Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint), Jake Shears (Scissor Sisters), Mike Kerr (Royal Blood), Carla Azar (Autolux, Jack White), Les Claypool (Primus), Matt Sweeney (Chavez, Superwolf, Endless Boogie), Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadows, Toast of London), Libby Grace and of course Töôrnst Hülpft.

METALLICA SCHOLARS INITIATIVE ENTERS SECOND YEAR

METALLICA SCHOLARS INITIATIVE ENTERS SECOND YEAR

ALL WITHIN MY HANDS FOUNDATION & AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF COMMUNITY COLLEGES TO DISTRIBUTE $1.5 MILLION TO 15 SCHOOLS

“This opportunity that All Within My Hands afforded me has absolutely been instrumental in changing the course of my life. Thank you for seeing a need and being the agent through which real change is happening in my life. My children get to witness me make a life course change and see firsthand that out of adversity can come greatness and the being resilient is possible no matter what happens to us in life.”—Metallica Scholar Angelic Ewing, Spokane Community College

Following a stellar inaugural year with results including job placement rates exceeding 90%, the Metallica Scholars Initiative has confirmed a second year of its support of community colleges and their career and technical education programs—featuring the expansion of the program from 10 to 15 schools, as well as the addition of matching grants from new partners.

The Metallica Scholars Initiative was created in 2019 through a partnership between the band’s All Within My Hands foundation (AWMH) and the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), a Washington, D.C. based organization representing the country’s more than 1,000 community colleges. 10 colleges from communities that had supported Metallica during its recent U.S. tours were selected via a competitive application process, each receiving $100,000 toward programs designed to support students training to enter the American workforce.

Final reports from all 10 schools and their more than 700 first-wave Metallica Scholars revealed an overall 80-90% program completion rate, and 95% job placement for those Metallica Scholars who completed their certifications/studies.

Year two of the Metallica Scholars Initiative will add five more community colleges, bringing the total number of schools to 15. It will also be receiving matching grants from new partners supplementing All Within My Hands’ cumulative $1.5 million contribution.

“Our 2019 Metallica Scholars have exceeded expectations and inspired us in more ways than we could have possibly imagined,” said Metallica’s Lars Ulrich. “We’re really excited to be able to expand the initiative in its second year, assisting more students in achieving their dreams and transforming their lives in 2020.”

“The impact of the Metallica Scholars Initiative has been extremely gratifying,” said Dr. Edward Frank, Executive Director of All Within My Hands. “We are indebted to all the schools, the AACC, and co-sponsors such as Wolverine, for their dedication to making this program successful and their help in changing the lives of so many people.  This transformative effect is exactly what the band and the board had hoped for when we started this program.”

“The colossal reputation of Metallica has given these colleges, and the trades they are supporting, new life and attention,” said Jennifer Worth, AACC Senior Vice President Workforce and Economic Development. “It has been an honor and a privilege to have the band’s and foundation board of directors trust to design and implement programs that will change the lives of hard working Americans looking to advance.”

The AWMH Foundation was established in 2017 by Metallica as a means to give back to the people and places that have supported the band, and to engage Metallica fans in philanthropic efforts. In addition to combatting hunger through an alliance with Feeding America, AWMH is focused on supporting sustainable communities through workforce education. All expenses of the foundation are covered by the band, the board, and a few special friends, so that 100% of donations go to the organizations it supports. AWMH is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization.  www.allwithinmyhands.org

As the voice of the nation’s community colleges, the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), delivers educational and economic opportunity for 12 million diverse students in search of the American Dream. Uniquely dedicated to access and success for all students, AACC’s nearly 1,100 member colleges provide an on-ramp to degree attainment, skilled careers and family-supporting wages. Located in Washington, D.C., AACC advocates for these not-for-profit, public-serving institutions to ensure they have the resources and support they need to deliver on the mission of increasing economic mobility for all.

About James Murphy
James Murphy is one of the most influential musical figures of the last two decades. As founder and principal of LCD Soundsystem, he has created four of the most acclaimed albums of the millennium—including 2017’s #1 AMERICAN DREAM (Columbia Records/DFA), which featured the Best Dance Recording GRAMMY-winning track “tonite.” Murphy is also founder of the DFA label, a renowned producer whose credits include albums by Arcade Fire and Yeah Yeah Yeahs, an in-demand remixer, guest musician on the likes of David Bowie’s ★, composer of scores for films including Greenberg and While We’re Young, and, of course, DJ with exquisite taste and great love of dark and obscure, undiscovered music, in the disco and house tradition.

About 2manydjs
David and Stephen Dewaele have consistently pushed the boundaries of music into new and innovative territory by diversifying into many different guises. They are a band (Soulwax), djs (2manydjs), a record label and studio (DEEWEE), a sound system (Despacio) and even created a visual radio station and app and website (Radio Soulwax) which became a globetrotting live event.  Not to mention producing some of the most cutting edge remixes such as Marie Davidson’s “Work It”which has been nominated for Best remix at the Grammys as well as Warpaint, Tame Impala, LCD Soundsystem, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Metronomy, Arcade Fire, Daft Punk, Gossip, Hot Chip, MGMT, and many more.  With their 2002 2manydjs album ‘As Heard on Radio Soulwax Pt 2’ they created a new remixing style that set the template for imitators ever since. In 2005 Soulwax were the first to record and release a remix of one of their own albums: ‘Any Minute Now’ which became ‘Nite Versions’.

In the midst of all this they have toured extensively throughout the globe, both as 2manydjs and Soulwax. After a long hiatus they return with the first Soulwax album in many years, From DEEWEE, recorded in a single day in their DEEWEE studio and in June 2018, they came back with another LP, “Essential” which was originally made for BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix. (They are the first artist to ever submit an entire hour’s worth of original material for the show).  Recently they have been producing an entire roster of acts for their own  DEEWEE label including Charlotte Adigery, Asa Moto, Laima and James Righton.

TICKETS ON SALE FRIDAY, JANUARY 24 AT 10AM LOCAL TIME AT RAMMSTEIN.COM

“If we define fun as the unknowing acceleration of time, then Rammstein’s particular brand of self-obliteration, in which time collapses entirely, is a guaranteed good time” —THE NEW YORKER

“Go for the fireballs, stay for the self-mythologizing and angst” —THE NEW YORK TIMES

“The commitment to excessive pyromania was epic stagecraft on a Wagnerian scale, several notches up from most arena rock. More important was that the six-piece band… wasn’t dependent on those fireworks but could have easily punished and soothed the senses to nearly the same effect with music alone.” —THE LOS ANGELES TIMES

“One of heavy music’s biggest and most dynamic live acts” —CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND

This year will see the North American debut of the most extreme spectacle in live music, when RAMMSTEIN brings its full-scale stadium production to this continent for the first time ever. KRUSPE, and TILL LINDEMANN, has remained unchanged since the band’s 1994 formation and 1995 release of its debut album, HERZELEID.  RAMMSTEIN’s second album, SEHNSUCHT, released in 1997, propelled the band to international fame and featured the GRAMMY-nominated single “DU HAST.” MUTTER, the third RAMMSTEIN album, was released in 2001 and was supported by what would be the band’s final U.S. tour for nearly a decade. REISE, REISE, the band’s fourth studio album, was released in 2004, preceded by the GRAMMY-nominated single “MEIN TEIL” and followed by fifth album ROSENROT in 2005. LIEBE IST FÜR ALLE DA, the sixth RAMMSTEIN studio album, was released in 2009 and reached #13 on the Billboard 200, making it RAMMSTEIN’s highest-charting album in the U.S. up to that point. LIFAD would be the first RAMMSTEIN album since 2001’s MUTTER to be supported by North American touring: On December 11, 2010, RAMMSTEIN played its first U.S. date in 10 years, a one-off headline at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The MSG show sold out in less than 20 minutes and was followed by extensive North American Tours in 2011 and 2012, which would sell out venues including the Forum in Los Angeles, Chicago’s Allstate Arena, the Bell Centre in Montreal and more. RAMMSTEIN made its debut on U.S. network television during the 2011 tour, performing “DU HAST” and “FEUER FREI!” on JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE!

RAMMSTEIN broke into the U.S. Top 10 for the first time with the May 17, 2019 release of its untitled seventh album, which entered at #9 on the Billboard 200. Produced by Olsen Involtini with RAMMSTEIN, the untitled record is comprised of 11 new RAMMSTEIN tracks including singles “AUSLANDER,” “RADIO” and “DEUTSCHLAND,” which have amassed combined streams and views exceeding 200 million. The release of the album was followed by the sold-out Europe Stadium Tour 2019, which ran May 17 through August 23, 2019.

RADIOHEAD: PUBLIC LIBRARY OF EXTENSIVE & ORGANIZED AUDIO, VISUAL, PHYSICAL ARCHIVE LIVE NOW

RADIOHEAD PUBLIC LIBRARY

EXTENSIVE & ORGANIZED AUDIO, VISUAL, PHYSICAL ARCHIVE LIVE NOW AT Radiohead.com

EACH BAND MEMBER TO SERVE AS LIBRARIAN FOR A DAY FROM JANUARY 20 THROUGH 24

The internet as a whole has never been a reliable resource for detailed or even accurate information re: Radiohead. Many sites that attempted to provide some measure of service have long since gone dark as well. The overall effect has been “Radiohead” search results that yield random and/or abbreviated shards: songs and album titles unaccompanied by detailed artwork or any additional context, low quality videos preceded by advertisements and shuffled via algorithms, and so on…

That ends with the unveiling of the Radiohead Public Library. From today, visitors at Radiohead.com will be able to create their own library card and membership number, and access a highly curated and organized archive of the band’s catalogue and corresponding visuals and various artifacts associated with each album: Detailed artwork, official videos, and ad-free HD live and TV performances, B-Sides and compilation tracks, previously out-of-print merchandise to be custom made on demand, band members’ “office chart” playlists from around the time of In RainbowsThe King of Limbs and A Moon Shaped Pool recording sessions, and more.

To commemorate the Library’s opening week, Colin and Jonny Greenwood, Ed O’Brien, Philip Selway and Thom Yorke will each take a turn serving as librarian for a day beginning January 20 and ending January 24, each presenting a curated selection of archival material across the band’s social media channels (as well as their own Radiohead Public Library cards).

Finally, coinciding with the Library’s opening, a number of previously unavailable Radiohead rarities have been made available to stream and download, including the band’s 1992 debut, the Drill EP, “I Want None of This” from the 2005 charity compilation Help!: A Day in the Life, and the 2011 TKOL RMX 8 remix EP.

BEASTIE BOYS: Apple Lands “Beastie Boys Story” Film, Produced by Spike Jonze

Apple Lands “Beastie Boys Story,” produced by Academy Award-winning director Spike Jonze

New film directed by Spike Jonze, and written by Beastie Boys Mike Diamond and Adam Horovitz along with Jonze, to portray the history and legacy of the revolutionary group

Apple today announced that it has acquired “Beastie Boys Story,” a new nonfiction film from Grammy Award-winning Beastie Boys members Mike Diamond and Adam Horovitz and Academy Award-winning director Spike Jonze. A special cut of the documentary feature will open exclusively in select IMAX® theatres for a limited engagement April 3, before premiering globally on Apple TV+ on April 24.

Beastie Boys, Mike Diamond and Adam Horovitz, tell you an intimate, personal story of their band and 40 years of friendship in this live documentary experience directed by their longtime friend and collaborator, and their former grandfather, filmmaker Spike Jonze.

The film is set to premiere on the heels of the 26th anniversary of the release of Beastie Boys’ #1 charting 1994 album, “Ill Communication,” and reunites Beastie Boys with director Spike Jonze over 25 years after directing the music video for the album’s immortal hit single, “Sabotage.”

“Beastie Boys Story” is produced by Grammy Award winner Jason Baum, Amanda Adelson, alongside director and writer Spike Jonze, and executive produced by Mike Diamond, Adam Horovitz, Dechen Wangdu-Yauch, John Silva, John Cutcliffe, Peter Smith, Thomas Benski, Dan Bowen, Sam Bridger, Michele Anthony, David Blackman and Ashley Newton.
The project grew out of Adam’s and Mike’s collaboration on their bestselling “Beastie Boys Book”

The film is produced for Apple by Fresh Bread and Pulse Films in association with Polygram Entertainment. The deal was negotiated by Endeavor Content and CAA on behalf of the filmmakers.

Apple TV+ is available on the Apple TV app on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, iPod touch, Mac, as well as select Samsung smart TVs, Roku and Amazon Fire TV devices and at tv.apple.com, for $4.99 per month with a seven day free trial. Comments from the filmmakers:
“There are some friends you have lunch with so many times over the years, you know their order.  Spike is one of those friends.  And even when you don’t recognize anything on the menu, he comes up with something good for the whole table.  Like when we wondered what to do when our book comes out… then Spike placed his order: You will put on a show for the children.” – Mike Diamond and Adam Horovitz

“I owe Beastie Boys a lot. One time, they pulled me out of a burning ship, and another time they helped me cheat on my college exam to get into Florida State. So, it was a real privilege to get to reunite with them and help them tell their story.” – Spike Jonze

“This is the eighth time I’ve rewritten this thing, the filmmakers kept telling me I was doing it wrong but I’m really feeling this one. Here’s what the film is: MikeDiamond and Adam Horovitz of Beastie Boys tell you an intimate, personal story of their band, and their 40 years of friendship together. From the 1980s New York City punk scene, to Fight For Your Right (to Party) and becoming the first hip-hop artists to make a #1 record (Licensed to Ill), through their evolution, which took them to Sabotage, Intergalactic and beyond. Created with their old friend, their former  grandfather and collaborator, filmmaker Spike Jonze, the film seamlessly mixes a live stage show and documentary to create a new format, a live documentary. Does that make sense? It’ll make more sense when you see the trailer that the filmmakers haven’t finished editing yet, despite constant badgering. But anyways, I’m not mad. In this film that was shot at Kings Theater in Brooklyn, Mike D and Adrock discuss their evolution as musicians, artists and people, and a whole bunch of other crazy sh!t. Their co-conspirator, musician, activist, inventor, discredited astrophysics professor and my favorite beastie boy, Adam Yauch, couldn’t be there that night because he passed away in 2012. But even though he’s not there, his spirit is very much felt onstage through Mike and Adam and the force of nature that was Yauch, their band, and their friendship.” – Larry
