Joshua Homme’s Desert Sessions collective is proud to unveil the first fruits of its expansion into visual collaboration: Homme’s recent meetings with students at the New York Film Academy’s Los Angeles campus have resulted in unique works by two filmmakers, each of whom was given a production budget to translate the music and lyrics of the Desert Sessions into their own vision.

Italian filmmaker Gabriele Fabbro took on the acoustic ballad “If You Run,” creating a haunting exploration of violence told through the eyes of a curious young woman, specifically inspired by deadly attacks on European journalists. “I used to read a lot of news about murders, especially on European newspapers. I remember one in particular that happened in a cornfield. That article came to mind while hearing ‘If You Run.’” The filmmaker said in a statement, “With this music video I want to touch themes such as ‘femicide’, ‘chase for justice’, ‘innocent curiosity vs violence’. But on top, I want to play with an existential fear. The fear of being powerless. Every tool in the video, from the shakiness of the handheld shots to the distorted sound of the radio, serves to exaggerate this fear.”

Filmmaker Jonathan Samukange employed a wholly different direction, reimagining Vols. 11 &12’s groove-heavy opener “Move Together” as soundtrack to a psychedelic take on the story of Adam and Eve. In his statement on the video, Samukange says, “I wanted to create a seamless balance between computer graphics and reality. I want my audience to escape into a time capsule, following the tragic love story of Adam and Eve.” Filmed in the director’s home country of Zimbabwe, the video enlisted residents of an entire village and used the region’s stunning natural landscape to create the hallucinatory trip through time. “This idea is completely nuts, but it is also grounded in reality with themes of love, togetherness, collaboration, betrayal, and even brainwashing.”

The spectrum of possibilities realized across these two visual works—as well as Rio Hackford and Chapman Baehler’s previous takes on “If You Run” and “Easier Said Than Done”—speaks further to the inspired sprawl and emotional impact of the material making up Desert Sessions Vols. 11 & 12 (aka respectively Arrivederci Despair and Tightwads Nitwits & Critics & Heels). Released October 25, 2019 on Matador Records, Vols. 11 & 12 ended a 16-year hiatus with the most ambitious entries ever in the project’s expansive and elusive catalog. The eight tracks were recorded (mostly) in December 2018 at Rancho De La Luna studios in Joshua Tree, CA, with Queens of the Stone Age founder and Desert Sessions ringleader/producer Joshua Homme enlisting a cast of players including Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint), Jake Shears (Scissor Sisters), Mike Kerr (Royal Blood), Carla Azar (Autolux, Jack White), Les Claypool (Primus), Matt Sweeney (Chavez, Superwolf, Endless Boogie), Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadows, Toast of London), Libby Grace and of course Töôrnst Hülpft.

BROKEN BELLS: “GOOD LUCK” VIDEO NOW LIVE

BROKEN BELLS

“GOOD LUCK” VIDEO LIVE NOW

a sweltering cut… hauntingly timely
– Variance

The heavy grooving song certainly feels pertinent to our current environment, opening with the lines “The face of evil is on the news tonight/ We see the darkness over light/ But have we really ever lived in better times?”
– Consequence of Sound

[Broken Bells] ponder the bleakness of modern times…  on Soulful new song “Good Luck.”
– Rolling Stone

the duo contemplate death and the end of the world over a grooving beat.
– Billboard

an upbeat reflective track rooted in the present.
– KCRW’s “Today’s Top Tune”

Think back, if you can, to September 2019 when post apocalyptic scenarios seemed a little further removed from daily reality, back when “Burton and Mercer… made time to create a masterpiece” (MXDWN) in the form of “Good Luck”…

Well, since then, 2020 has long since said “Hold my beer,” and the ever-prophetic future dwelling duo of James Mercer and Brian Burton, collectively known as Broken Bells, have made a video for that song available in wide release. Previously available exclusively on TIDAL, the “Good Luck” video produced by Ian Blair and directed by Kimberly Stuckwisch and Nelson De Castro, distills the song’s brooding inexorable groove into one young boy’s journey from a troubled existence into the unknown.

In other news, due to the unfortunate mandatory closings of physical retailers, a very limited quantity of the vinyl single is once again available for sale directly via https://brokenbells.kungfustore.com/all-product/good-luck-shelter-7-brk32.html

While we await updates on the third full length Broken Bells album (still in the works), the lyrics of “Good Luck” offer up a welcome and prescient note of optimism for these strangest of times:

“Where will it end? After the twilight, always a sunrise… Good Luck, my friend… In time, it ends”

“It’s about scale, about toxicity. About these insane industrial machines that represent so well my fear and ambiguous attraction for human madness. Here is the world I have built around Goliath, a world where the dominated can defeat the gigantic, the unbeatable.”  Yoann Lemoine.

The wait is finally over.

French artist WOODKID is coming back in 2020 with his long awaited sophomore album.

“I think this is all about my dangerous fascination for power and scale.

About the massive challenges I’ve had to face in the past years and the growing feeling of insecurity facing the weight of things I have built over time.

I made my first album thinking I knew everything. I made this one realizing I knew very little. I composed this record as an acceptance of my fragility, of my wrong decisions, to reach light, as an intimate remedy, somehow. Here is me, probably not as strong as I pretended to be.

Maybe this is about all forms of toxicity, about environment, maybe it’s about the speed of information and the furiousness of the music industry, maybe it’s about how I’m trying to find my own peace and temporality through it.

It’s definitely about the individual and collective responsibility in the creation of the monstrous and how to hopefully defeat it. Here is the first song of this piece. It obviously refers to the myth of David and Goliath. I wish it didn’t echo so much with the world situation right now.” —Yoann Lemoine

EOB (ED O’BRIEN): EARTH OUT NOW ON CAPITOL RECORDS

EOB: EARTH

OUT NOW ON CAPITOL RECORDS

JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE! PERFORMANCE TO AIR APRIL 23RD

Even though Earth has been in the oven for several years, it feels especially suited for our present moment… Earth is warm and open; it’s a summer-weather record coming out at a time when we’re stuck indoors. Where Radiohead often pulls you to dark and esoteric corners of our modern dystopia, Earth takes you by the hand and brings you outside into the sun.
– GQ

It’s a treat for the ears, filled with strong instrumental performances and lush arrangements.
– Wall St Journal

Seven years in the making, Ed O’Brien of Radiohead is proud to finally release his debut album under the EOB moniker: Earth; out today on Capitol Records across all digital and physical platforms. Physical configurations of Earth are available at https://EOB.lnk.to/storePR – including 180 gram 12” vinyl LP and CD versions, and more. Streaming and downloads can be found here: https://EOB.lnk.to/EarthPR.

The story of Earth begins in Brazil, where O’Brien relocated with his family just after Radiohead’s 2012 tour supporting The King of Limbs—specifically Carnivale in Rio in 2013, where Ed’s chance attendance proved life altering: “Truly the greatest show on Earth,” Ed recalls in a letter to fans. “An explosion of light, melody, rhythm and love… For me, one of those musical eureka moments.”

Reinvigorated and brimming with new inspiration, Ed began recording immediately upon his return home to Wales. Handling vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, percussion and programming, Ed enlisted the help of legendary music producer Flood, with assistance by apprentice turned master Catherine Marks.

Three decades in Radiohead had instilled in Ed a high standard for musical collaborators. So it was that Earth’s songs were brought to life by a diverse and stellar array of musicians including an appearance by O’Brien’s Radiohead bandmate Colin Greenwood, Portishead guitarist Adrian Utley, Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche, drum legend Omar Hakim, masterful bass player Nathan East, Laura Marling, David Okumu of The Invisible, Adam ‘Cecil‘ Bartlett, Richie Kennedy, and Marcelo S. Silva.

A masterful collection of vibrant, colorful songs with occasionally dark undertones, Earth is a confluence of grim realities processed during everyday life in Wales, refracted through the kaleidoscopic, optimistic lens of Ed’s time in Brazil. Earth’s release week will culminate with the first ever network television appearance of EOB on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Thursday, April 23rd. In a performance pre-recorded during Ed’s February visit to Los Angeles, EOB performed Earth opener and first single “Shangri La,” in a live configuration featuring Dishan Abrahams, Hinako Omori, Ross Chapman, and Alvin Ford Jr..

Earth’s release has been preceded by multiple warmly received advance offerings, including the Top 10 AAA single “Shangri La” (“shimmies with elastic Arthur Russell-ian movement before going full-on Brit pop guitar, complete with handclaps”—NPR Music), “Brasil” (“a nine-minute shapeshifting epic”Stereogum), “Olympik” (“Psychedelic ear worm”—Rolling Stone) and “Cloak of the Night” (“beautiful…simple and heartwarming”—Consequence of Sound).

“These songs were created in a spirit of love, with the best wishes for a global community,” Ed says. “It’s my sincere hope that during these strange and difficult times, some people might find a little light and consolation in them.”
