JACK WHITE: BLUNDERBUSS #1 ALBUM IN FOUR COUNTRIES

The people have spoken: Blunderbuss is #1.

The popular response to Jack White’s debut album has matched the critical fervor surrounding it: In the week since its April 24th release on Third Man Records/Columbia Records, Blunderbuss has sold 137,554 domestically, debuting at #1 on the U.S. albums chart–his first ever recorded effort to do so.

The highest charting and selling solo debut album this year in the U.S., Blunderbuss has also gone #1 in the UK, Canada and Switzerland–making a grand total of four countries where Blunderbuss currently tops the charts.

In America, Blunderbuss’ crashing into the #1 spot was heralded by Jack’s April 26th performance of “Freedom At 21” on The Colbert Report (http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/413296/april-26-2012/jack-white—-freedom-at-21-), an American Express Unstaged concert at Webster Hall on Friday April 27th (directed by Gary Oldman, with highlights archived atyoutube.com/jackwhitevevo) and another intimate underplay at Los Angeles’ Mayan Theater–a performance the Los Angeles Times called “suggestive of everyone from Chuck Berry, Hubert Sumlin and Keith Richards to Jimmy Page, Johnny Thunders and Joe Strummer… worthy of Bob Dylan… as if he’d gathered inside his head many different strains, accents and ideas of pre-digital American music — country, folk, blues, soul, rock ‘n’ roll and every combination thereof — and was pouring them out through his fretboard-busy fingers and wailing voice.”

The L.A. Times also joined in on the chorus of critical acclaim that has greeted Jack’s #1 debut album, seeing a new Rolling Stone 4.5 star lead review’s “huge riffs, wild ideas, tunes for miles: Jack White turns in a classic” and raising it with an “as impressive and magnetic a record as he’s ever made.”

On the touring front, Jack recently confirmed an all ages matinee show at the Scottish Rite Theater in Detroit on May 24th, a headline appearance at one day of the Roskilde Festival taking place July 5th-8th in Denmark, shows in Australia at Festival Hall in Melbourne on July 25th, Hordern Pavilion in Sydney on July 26th and  July 27th headlining the Splendour In The Grass Festival at Belongil Fields in Byron Bay, a headline show at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, CO on August 8th, and a performance at the Outside Lands Festival taking place August 10th-12th in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park.

DAVE GROHL TO DIRECT AND PRODUCE FEATURE DOCUMENTARY

(May 1, 2012, Los Angeles, CA) – Confirming widely circulated rumors, Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters and Nirvana announced today that he will direct and produce a feature Documentary film, SOUND CITY about the infamous recording studio in Van Nuys, California. The film was conceived by Grohl after purchasing the legendary Neve 8028 recording console from Sound City Studios last year. The console, built in 1972, is considered by many to be the crown jewel of analog recording equipment, having recorded such artists as Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Cheap Trick, Guns and Roses, Fear, Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Slipknot, Nine Inch Nails, Metallica, and countless other musical legends over the past 40 years.

Through interviews with the artists and producers that created decades of musical history at Sound City, the film will showcase the amazing history of the studio, focus on the albums recorded there that went on to change the world, discuss the human element of music in an age of technology, and feature performances from many of the artists that called it “home”.

Grohl’s personal connection to Sound City began with the 1991 recording of Nirvana’s breakthrough album, “Nevermind”. Selling over 30 million copies worldwide, “Nevermind” changed the entire musical landscape and forever altered the course of Dave Grohl’s life.

Roswell Films, a division of the Roswell Records label that releases Foo Fighters music, will distribute the film. Key personnel involved with the film include Producer/Director Dave Grohl; Editor Paul Crowder (Dogtown & Z Boys, Once In a Lifetime, Riding Giants); and Writer Mark Monroe (The Cove, Once In a Lifetime, The Tillman Story). The film is also being produced in conjunction with Jim Rota, John Ramsay, and Therapy studios.

Speaking to both the art of music and the art of filmmaking, Grohl crafted the letter below to share his vision for the film. Information and future announcements related to the film can be found at www.soundcitymovie.com

THE SHINS: “THE RIFLE’S SPIRAL”: A FILM BY JAMIE CALIRI

VIDEO PREMIERE LIVE NOW AT Nowness.com

ALSO AVAILABLE TO VIEW IN 3D EXCLUSIVELY ON THE NINTENDO 3DS

The Shins have teamed with Nowness.com to unveil the clip for “The Rifle’s Spiral” from their acclaimed Port Of Morrow (Aural Apothecary/Columbia) album. “The Rifle’s Spiral” is available for the next 24 hours exclusively at http://smarturl.it/theriflesspiralvideo. It can also be viewed in 3D only on the Nintendo 3DS.

The stunning visual interpretation of “The Rifle’s Spiral” was realized by Jamie Caliri, whose animated efforts have garnered accolades including an Emmy and three Annie awards. Caliri’s influential short works include the sweeping end titles for Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, theatrically released spots for KCRW Los Angeles and animated spots for United Airlines. Though currently focused on feature projects, Caliri’s 21-year-plus career has also found him directing music videos, including the Best Music Video Grammy-nominated “Early To Bed” by Morphine.

“The Rifle’s Spiral” follows in the tradition of previous Port Of Morrow videos including the live in studio “Bait And Switch” and its accompanying “Clapping Butter” short feature that premiered atFunnyorDie.com, and  “Simple Song,” which received a brilliantly dark treatment from DANIELS. Port Of Morrow was release March 20 and has been lauded by THE NEW YORKER as an album that brings Shins mainman James Mercer “closer to the lineage he’s been gradually writing himself into: the lush psychedelia of XTC, on an album like ‘Skylarking,’ or even seventies pop acts like Joe Walsh…”

The Shins are currently on tour until further notice.

METRIC: SYNTHETICA ALBUM ARTWORK & TRACKLISTING REVEALED

FIRST SINGLE “YOUTH WITHOUT YOUTH” AVAILABLE MAY 1st (Album out June 12, 2012)

NEW TOUR DATES ANNOUNCED

EXPERIENCE REFLECTIONS OF SYNTHETICA AT ILOVEMETRIC.COM

METRIC has revealed further details surrounding the release of their fifth, full-length studio album Synthetica.

Synthetica will be self-released globally on the band’s own label (MMI), through a collection of joint venture partnerships and enhanced distribution deals with companies including Mom + Pop Music in the USA, ATC Management in the UK, PIAS for continental Europe, Asia and Africa, Universal Music in Canada, Arts & Crafts in Mexico, Lab 344 in South America and Create/Control for Australia & New Zealand.

Titles for the 11 songs that make up the album are available now and noted in sequence below. Lead single “Youth Without Youth” will be released digitally throughout North America on May 1st.

“Youth Without Youth” tackles the topic of a fraying social state with bristling energy, lyrical complexity and a momentary breakdown guaranteed to get crowds jumping along with the song’s driving rhythm. “I’ve always wanted to do a song with the Gary Glitter beat,” says METRIC guitarist Jimmy Shaw. Shaw produced Synthetica at METRIC’s own Giant Studios in Toronto and at Electic Lady Studios in New York City, where it was mixed by long-time collaborator, John O’Mahony.

Strong beats and futuristic, yet organic sounds propell this new album forward. The first sound you hear on Synthetica’s lead track, “Artificial Nocturne” is a pulsating, grimy throb. It returns as the anchor on gut-wrenching meditation “Dreams So Real”, as well as hypnotic morality twister and album closer, “Nothing But Time.” According to Shaw, “That sound is the foundation of the album. Oddly enough, it’s actually not a synthesizer. It’s a ’60s organ played through a homemade pedal dreamed up by a local wizard who posted an ad on Craiglist. Together they set the emotional tone for the whole record.” In all, fans can expect a powerful, catchy, and lyrically captivating new album from the band.

While fans will have to wait another 2 months before they can hear the whole album, effective immediately they can experience Reflections of Synthetica exclusively at http://www.ilovemetric.com/

The gorgeous album art by Toronto-based photographer/designer Justin Broadbent, depicting an inverted window in an upside-down world, is a fitting cover image to capture the complexity of the music within. “We wanted the artwork for Synthetica to be thought provoking and a little disorienting, an optical illusion which asks you to stop for a moment and consider what you are looking at,” says lead singer Emily Haines. “We were very influenced by images from the Radical architecture movement of the 1960s, and Justin’s representation of the natural world seen through a physically impossible window – or is it a stage? –  struck us immediately as the right cover for this album.”

“I like looking into things that are looking into things,” explains Broadbent. “Like a pool reflecting the sky, or a television in a shop window.  For the Synthetica cover I tried to create a beautiful landscape that doesn’t sit comfortably with the viewer.  We are disoriented among the clouds, flipped in a room without walls.  There is a synthetic perfection to the gold curtains. Like fresh lipstick, precious but temporary.  Everything else is a mirror.”

METRIC’s previous album, the unforgettable and massively successful Fantasies, was globally self-released by the band outside Canada and went on to sell well over a million singles and nearly 500,000 albums worldwide.

Metric is currently confirmed for select performances on the international summer festival circuit, plus a series of headline dates throughout Europe in June/July which were announced today (ticket pre-order begins Wednesday April 18th at http://www.crowdsurge.com/metric/.)
