ANDREW BIRD: NOBLE BEAST ENTERS CHART AT #12

Biggest Indie Label Debut Of The Week, Second Highest Overall
U.S. Tour Continues With Sold Out Carnegie Hall Show
Second Show Added At Chicago’s Civic Opera House

“Andrew Bird might be the only musician to earn a headlining slot at Carnegie Hall on the strength of his whistling… it may be your last chance to catch this Bird up close.”–VANITY FAIR

Andrew Bird’s Noble Beast (Fat Possum) has landed at #12 on the U.S. album chart, selling over 25,000 units in its opening week. The debut is the highest of the week for an independent label release and second only to Mariah Carey’s Ballads. It is also the #1 seller of the week in Bird’s hometown of Chicago.

Noble Beast’s marks a career high for Bird, more than doubling the first week sales of his previous effort, March 2007’s Armchair Apocrypha, which was the first of his records to crack the Top 100 and ultimately sold in excess of 100,000 copies.

Andrew Bird plays for a standing room only crowd tonight at New York’s prestigious Carnegie Hall. His current North American tour kicked off Sunday, January 25 with a sold out show at Philadelphia’s Theater of the Living Arts and continues through April. Bird’s devoted following has already snapped up every ticket to his shows in Washington DC, Atlanta, Orlando, Austin, San Francisco and Omaha, with several other cities about to follow suit.

More recently, tickets for Bird’s April 10 homecoming extravaganza at Chicago’s 3500+ capacity Civic Opera House blew out within hours of going on sale, necessitating an additional show on April 9, general on sale for which begins Saturday, January 31.

AFI to Announce Final Winner of Begin Transmission TODAY

http://begintransmission.afireinside.net

Two weeks have gone by since voting for the AFI Begin Transmission contest started. Five band chosen winners were picked and 13,000+ fans have participated in voting for the 6th and final winner, the Community Winner. The 850 fan auditions have earned over 100,000 votes and 10,000 comments. At 6pm pst AFI will announce the winner of the community vote, the last fan who has earned the right to sing on the new album.

However, this experience is far from over. The band has many more plans for Begin Transmission that will become a reality in the coming weeks. Including the opportunity for a handful of “Honorable Mentions”…i.e. I wouldn’t go deleting those submissions just yet…

WAR CHILD ANNOUNCE HEROES FULL TRACK LIST AND ARTIST LINEUP

HEROES TO BE RELEASED FEBRUARY 24, 2009 ON ASTRALWERKS RECORDS

For immediate release:
War Child and Astralwerks Records are pleased to announce the full track list and artist lineup for the new benefit album, Heroes, which will be released on February 24, 2009. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of Heroes will go to support War Child, an award winning charity that provides humanitarian assistance to war-affected children in some of the most devastated regions of the world.
The album’s concept mirrors one of the intrinsic aims of War Child’s efforts in war zones around the world – to place faith in the next generation. We asked some of the biggest legends in music history to select a classic track from their own songwriting canon, and nominate an artist from the next generation to create a modern reworking of that classic song. This album is the result: 16 exclusive and truly inspired cover versions.

The track list in full:
1. Beck (Bob Dylan – “Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat”)
2. The Kooks (The Kinks – “Victoria”)
3. The Hold Steady (Bruce Springsteen – “Atlantic City”)
4. Hot Chip (Joy Division – “Transmission”)
5. Lily Allen feat. Mick Jones (The Clash – “Straight To Hell”)
6. Yeah Yeah Yeahs (The Ramones – “Sheena Is A Punk Rocker”)
7. Franz Ferdinand (Blondie – “Call Me”)
8. Duffy (Paul McCartney – “Live And Let Die”)
9. Estelle (Stevie Wonder – “Superstition”)
10. Rufus Wainwright (Brian Wilson -” Wonderful & Song For Children”)
11. Scissor Sisters (Roxy Music – “Do The Strand”)
12. Peaches (Iggy Pop – “Search And Destroy”)
13. Adam Cohen (Leonard Cohen – “Take This Waltz”)
14. Elbow (U2 – “Running To Stand Still”)
15. The Like (Elvis Costello – “You Belong To Me”)
16. TV On The Radio (David Bowie – “Heroes”)

“I have been supporting War Child since 1995. Their work with children in war zones saves lives and their work with those who take decisions that help them to do something about it saves even more lives. The breadth of talent on this project is amazing; it’s great that so many people gave their time, energy and support to this initiative. I urge everyone to support War Child.” – Sir Paul McCartney

“War Child do exactly what it says on the tin. These kids shouldn’t be in such circumstances in the first place, but they are, so thank god someone’s doing something about it.” – Guy Garvey, Elbow

“On television we are constantly bombarded by all these horrific images. It’s important to realize that they are real people, real children, and that they need real help and real love.” – Rufus Wainwright

The album is dedicated to the support of the real heroes – children who live with the brutal effects of war.

Why is War Child needed?
Two-thirds of all casualties in war are children. In Afghanistan, one in four children will die before the age of five. War has forced eighteen million children to flee their homes, and there are three hundred thousand children who have been conscripted into armed forces around the world.
War Child is an award-winning charity that provides opportunities and long term solutions for war-affected children, focusing on education, strengthening children’s rights, reducing poverty and fostering self-reliance. War Child works in partnership with local people and organizations to build sustainable programming that empowers children and their communities.
Despite increased security constraints War Child is still operating successfully to protect children in Darfur, Sudan; continues to rebuild and re-equip schools in the increasingly volatile Democratic Republic of Congo; is on the ground in Afghanistan providing support to vulnerable women and their children; and works to protect the rights of women and girls in northern Uganda who have suffered greatly from a long and brutal war. War Child also has programs in Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, Georgia and Sri Lanka. Working closely with the music industry, War Child provides awareness, support and action for children’s rights everywhere. www.warchild.us

Notes to editors on “Heroes”
– The 16 legends supporting the project have combined global album sales of over 1.4 billion.
– The new artists chosen to cover the classic tracks include the act behind Rolling Stone’s Album of the Year 2008, TV On The Radio, 2008 Grammy nominees Beck, Hot Chip and Rufus Wainwright, UK Mercury prize winners Elbow, and multi Grammy award nominee Duffy, the UK’s biggest selling album artist of 2008.
– Some legends selected one of their all-time classic standards like Stevie Wonder’s ‘Superstition’, covered by Estelle, and Blondie’s ‘Call Me’, covered by Franz Ferdinand. Some selected favorite tracks that deserve to be rediscovered as with Scissor Sister’s exhilarating version of Roxy Music’s ‘Do The Strand’ (not released as a single in the UK) and Lily Allen’s stunning new take on The Clash’s ‘Straight To Hell’ (originally the b-side of ‘Should I Stay, Or Should I Go’).
– The album was recorded over six months in studios in London, Manchester, Paris, Berlin, New York and Los Angeles. It was mastered at Abbey Road studios in London.

AFI is inviting its fans, as vocalist Davey Havok puts it, “to be a part of the record, very literally. We’d like to invite you to come and sing on this new record that we’re making.”

Havok, guitarist Jade Puget, bassist Hunter and drummer Adam Carson are asking fans to submit videos (maximum two minutes in length), providing personal background, interests, etc. ultimately proving why he or she should be chosen to be a part of the new AFI album.

Submissions will be accepted at Begintransmission.afireinside.net from Saturday, December 20th through Sunday, January 4th. One additional winner will be chosen by AFI fans who will be able to vote on submissions posted at the AFI site.

AFI’s as yet untitled eighth record follows up DECEMBERUNDERGROUND, which was released on 6/6/06, debuted at #1 on the U.S. album chart, and went on to sell over a million copies. MONKEY: JOURNEY TO THE WEST DIPLO, KWES REMIXES OF “MONKEY BEE” DIGITAL RELEASE JANUARY 13

“A rare non-terrible pop-classical crossover”–NEW YORK

“Breathtaking… effortless integration of different traditions”–TIME

“A triumph of creativity”–THE HUFFINGTON POST

January 13 will see the U.S. digital release of two distinctive remixes–one by Diplo and one by Kwes–of “Monkey Bee,” a track from MONKEY: JOURNEY TO THE WEST (XL Recordings), the acclaimed album based on the Mandarin Opera reinterpreted by GORILLAZ creators Damon Albarn (music) and Jamie Hewlett (visuals).

Additionally MONKEY: JOURNEY TO THE WEST was recently given an ultra deluxe treatment by UK-based Vinyl Factory. Limited to 2000 copies worldwide, each signed and numbered package comes in a hand-made, black cloth-bound gold-foiled box containing four exclusive Jamie Hewlett giclee art prints on Somerset archival paper, each stamped and numbered, one signed and dated. Housed in a red, gold-foiled folio; a cloth-bound hardback 84-page art book; two super-heavyweight 200-gram vinyl LPs featuring six bonus tracks not on the commercial release, and more. Additionally every purchase of the Box Set includes a digital version of the album. Further information can be found at http://www.vinylfactory.co.uk/shop/monkey_le/index.php.

MONKEY: JOURNEY TO THE WEST was first staged June 28, 2007 in the UK at the inaugural Manchester International Festival, when world-renowned theatre, opera and film director Chen Shi-Zheng enlisted Albarn and Hewlett to provide unique, modern musical and visual interpretations of the themes and characters of this most beloved work of Chinese folklore. The result was a new stage show for the 21st century that recast an ancient Chinese legend as a dazzling spectacle involving nearly 40 Chinese circus acrobats, martial artists and singers, and an orchestra of both Western and traditional Chinese instruments. MONKEY has since played to sold-out houses across Europe, made its U.S. debut at the 2008 Spoleto Festival USA, played at London’s famed Royal Opera House, and is in the midst of an extended London run in a specially built tented theater adjacent to the O2 Arena.
