TAYLOR HAWKINS & THE COATTAIL RIDERS RED LIGHT FEVER IN STORES TODAY

DIGITAL 8-TRACK PLAYER LIVE NOW AT http://8track.taylorhawkins.com/
APPEARING ON JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE THIS THURSDAY APRIL 22nd

Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders will not only be commemorating the April 20 release of sophomore album Red Light Fever (Shanabelle/RCA) with a show at L.A.’s Troubadour and an April 22 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live—the band is also celebrating online, with the unveiling of the world’s first digital 8-track player. Beginning today, visitors to http://8track.taylorhawkins.com/ can preview excerpts of tracks from the brand new record in full vintage 8-track quality.

With stops scheduled in Santa Barbara, Las Vegas, Boston, Toronto, Baltimore, New York and Philadelphia, the Red Light Fever tour will feature Hawkins on vocals and a variety of instruments, joined by veteran Coattail Riders Chris Chaney (bass), Gannin Arnold (guitar), Nate Wood (guitar), as well as Foo Fighters touring percussionist Drew Hester. The Coattail Riders coterie will unveil the first ever live interpretations of the brand new Red Light Fever material as well as tracks from the band’s eponymous 2006 debut album.

The genesis of Red Light Fever can be traced back to an early 2009 break from the Foo Fighters’ grueling touring schedule that freed up time for Hawkins to begin demoing tracks for a second Coattail Riders record. However, Hawkins’ providing drums and vocals on all tracks among other instruments soon became the only thing Red Light Fever would have in common with its homespun predecessor. The record snowballed into full on sessions at the Foo Fighters’ state of the art 606 studio complex, with Hawkins was joined by Chaney, Arnold, Wood, and a stellar supporting cast including Elliot Easton of the Cars, Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen, and last but by no  means least, Hawkins’ bandmate Dave Grohl.

Red Light Fever could be considered a labor of love – if the sheer joy exuded in every note, influence  and nuance of every song didn’t make the entire affair seem so effortless. Hawkins’ increasingly accomplished vocals and world renowned drumming skills  recall and pay tribute to Hawkins’ vast spectrum of classic rock heroes – from the vintage 70s glam stomp of “Way Down,” the hard rock rave up “Not Bad  Luck,” a nod to Beatlesque balladry in the form of “Hell To Pay,” and many more. Virtually every track evokes memories of the respective heydays of the Chinn-Chapman hit factory, The Move, Sweet, and even a little 10cc for good  measure – all imbued with Hawkins’ unmistakable musical personality.

MATES OF STATE: CRUSHES (THE COVERS MIXTAPE) COVERS ALBUM OUT THIS SUMMER

Free Download of “Laura” Now Available at MatesofState.com

Mates of State confirms the completion and track listing of Crushes (The Covers Mixtape), a covers album to be released this summer and consisting of the following songs by some of the Mates’ personal favorites:

1. Laura (Girls)
2. Son et Lumiere (The Mars Volta)
3. Sleep the Clock Around (Belle & Sebastian)
4. Technicolor Girls (Death Cab for Cutie)
5. Long Way Home (Tom Waits)
6. Love Letter (Nick Cave)
7. Second Hand News (Fleetwood Mac)
8. 17 Pink Sugar Elephants (Vashti Bunyan)
9. Roller Coaster Ride (Dear Nora)
10. True Love Will Find You in the End (Daniel Johnston)

Crushes… is the first full length recorded and produced by Mates Jason Hammel and Kori Gardner themselves, with a mixing assist from longtime collaborator Peter Katis (The National, Swell Season, Interpol, etc.). Arguably their most vibrant effort to date, Crushes… has been preceded by a free download of the album opening version of Girls’ “Laura,” currently available at matesofstate.com. Every one of the album’s ten tracks is equal measures bold choice and affectionate celebration. The Mars Volta’s brooding psychedelic epic “Son et Lumieire” segues seamlessly into an ever breezier re-interpretation of Belle & Sebastian’s “Sleep the Clock Around,” while Tom Waits’ “Long Way Home” is transformed from a sparse ode to tough luck love into an adrenalized anthem, and so forth.

Commenting on the inspiration behind the genesis of Crushes…, the Mates said, “We’ve been talking about doing a covers record for a long time.  We’d hear a great song at 2 AM while driving the straight line from one part of Texas to the next, and all we’d want to do is play that song as if we had written it.  There are so many artists we considered, some for the mere fact that they wrote a perfect song, some for nostalgia’s sake, some because more people need to hear them, some for the challenge, and some to shed a whole different light on a song: Our light… make it a duet, more optimistic or maybe less traditional.”

The completion of Crushes… also had the unexpected after-effect of jumpstarting the creation of the next Mates of State record: “When we were finished, we couldn’t wait to write our own songs again…. We hadn’t counted on this covers project making us approach our own songs in these new ways.  Too often in the past, we’d get stuck writing in a certain structure.  In dissecting these songs, taking out the biggest creative component–actually writing the song–we were more thoughtful of other musical aspects.  We considered design, tones, patterns or lack of patterns, the beauty of simplicity and simply put, different artistic impressions of music.  And then most of the time we’d come to the conclusion that you just can’t analyze and you can’t deny a good song, it’s just magic… In a sense, these other great bands made us a better band.”

BROKEN BELLS ANNOUNCE FIRST EVER TOUR

James Mercer and Danger Mouse To Take “Soothing melodies that get stuck in your head for days” (TIME Magazine) On The Road Beginning May 18 in San Diego

Debut Album Moves Nearly 50K First Week, Peaks at #1 on iTunes Album Chart

In the wake of their new band’s self titled Columbia Records debut charting at #7 and selling just shy of 50,000 in its first week (and reaching as high as #1 on iTunes),  James Mercer and Brian Burton a/k/a Danger Mouse have confirmed Broken Bells first ever tour. The dates commence May 18 in San Diego and will include stops in 16 North American cities with support by The Morning Benders

In addition to being the year’s highest charting debut album by an alternative/rock band,  Broken Bells’ has met with an insanely and unanimously positive critical reception:  Rolling Stone has hailed the album as “the year’s coolest left field pop disc” in a 4-star lead review, while Wired described it as “crazy good stuff”  and Entertainment Weekly praised it as a “subtly savory sonic morsel.”

The mere handful of shows the band has played to date have fared likewise, selling out as quickly as tickets could be processed, and dazzling crowds in Los Angeles, New York, and most recently Austin. Witnessing one of these first few performances, US Weekly likened the Broken Bells live experience to “being at a cozy, intimate underground basement party somewhere in Northern California with the best art rock band on the coast providing the soundtrack.”

Broken Bells features Mercer on vocals, guitars and bass while Burton plays organ, drums, piano, synths and bass. The pair play all instruments on the album with the exception of a full string section arranged by Daniele Luppi. Broken Bells was recorded by Todd Monfalcone and Kennie Takahashi at Mondo Studio in Los Angeles and produced by Danger Mouse.

Each a long-time fan of the other’s work, Burton and Mercer first met face-to-face backstage at the 2004 Roskilde Festival in Copenhagen. The pair immediately hit it off and kept in touch over the prevailing half decade and in May 2008 seized the opportunity to finally collaborate on original music together. Broken Bells was pared down from more than 20 pieces of new music written and recorded to the 10 songs that coalesced together the most seamlessly.

Mercer and Burton will continue to work as a band in the future.

TOKYO POLICE CLUB: CHAMP

New Album Out June 8
New Song “Breakneck Speed” Streaming Now at http://tokyopoliceclub.com/
Coachella, Bonnaroo, Special Guest Dates with Passion Pit Confirmed

Newmarket Ontario’s favorite sons Tokyo Police Club have confirmed the title and release date of the band’s second full length album: Champ will be released June 8 on the band’s new U.S. label home mom+pop. The band has provided a sneak peek at the new record in the form of the track “Breakneck Speed,” currently streaming at at http://tokyopoliceclub.com/

Though coincidental, the title of the new song is more than apt, given the pace with which the months leading up to Champ’s release are filling up: The band will return to its rigorous touring regimen in early April, with international appearances including  April 17 at Coachella, June 11 at Bonnaroo, and a June run supporting Passion Pit concluding with an already sold out June 29 show at Brooklyn’s Prospect Park Bandshell and a June 30 inaugural performance at NYC’s Governor’s Island.  In addition, Tokyo Police Club will spend late May and early June in Europe, including a headline appearance at the Immergut Festival in Germany. For further dates as they’re announced, more details and updates, check back at http://tokyopoliceclub.com/shows

Tokyo Police Club is Greg Alsop (drums), Josh Hook (guitar), David Monks (vocals, bass) and Graham Wright (keys/percussion). The band formed in 2005 and released the debut EP A Lesson In Crime the following year to instant and universal acclaim. One more EP, a digital-only single and a few world tours later, Tokyo Police Club’s first full length album, Elephant Shell was released in April 2008. Elephant Shell’s release was preceded by multiple sold out shows in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Toronto, and followed by appearances on The Late Show With David Letterman, The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson and, yes, Desperate Housewives. Critical response to the full length was even more enthusiastic and diverse, with the likes of GQ, Elle, Spin, Rolling Stone and Men’s Health all giving thumbs up. The band toured relentlessly to support Elephant Shell, finally wrapping up in the U.S. at the August 2009 All Points West Festival.

Champ is Tokyo Police Club’s second full album and first for mom+pop, the independent label formed in 2008 by Cliff Burnstein,  Peter Mensch and Michael Goldstone. Burnstein and Mensch are the owners of Qprime, management for the likes of Metallica,  Red Hot Chili Peppers,  Snow Patrol,  Muse,  Silversun Pickups,  and The Mars Volta,  among others. Goldstone is a veteran A&R exec whose most recent tenure at Sire saw him sign Regina Spektor and Tegan and Sara. Other mom+pop artists include Metric and Sleigh Bells.  As with previous Tokyo Police Club records, Champ will be released in the UK and Europe by Memphis Industries, home of such artists as The Go! team, Field Music and The Ruby Suns.

LCD SOUNDSYSTEM “DRUNK GIRLS” GONE WILD ON THE INTERNET, NEW YORK SHOWS ANNOUNCED, NEW ALBUM TRACK LIST UPDATED

A first full helping of the forthcoming third LCD Soundsystem album has been loosed upon the worldwide web in the form of the just-leaked first single “Drunk Girls.” The still untitled album will be released May 18 in the U.S. on DFA/Virgin.

Snippets of the new album’s “All I Want” can be heard in a new clip documenting the record’s sessions at The Manshun in L.A. at http://www.lcdsoundsystem.com/clip4/

In a bit of unplanned synergy, the “Drunk Girls” leak coincides with the announcement of LCD Soundsystem’s first New York area shows in eons. The band will play Terminal 5 on May 20 and 21. Tickets can be purchased at:

The above were recorded at The Manshun in Los Angeles and the DFA  studios in New York and mixed at DFA from April 2009 through February 2010.   TBD was written and produced by James Murphy. Additional mixes were done  by Dave Sardy as indicated (*).

The new album is LCD Soundsystem’s  first full offering of new studio material since 2007’s Sound Of  Silver, which was named best album of the last decade by NPR, ranked #1 in the 2007 Village Voice Pazz & Jop critics poll, landed at #12 and #17 respectively in Rolling Stone and Pitchfork’s best albums of the decade, and like its predecessor 2005’s  LCD Soundsystem received a Grammy nomination for Best Electronic/Dance  Album. Sound Of Silver also featured “All My Friends,” ranked #4 by Time in its  Best Songs of 2007 and named single of the year by Pitchfork, and Entertainment Weekly #8 song of 2007 “Someone Great.” In 2008, LCD  Soundsystem contributed the track “Big Ideas” to the soundtrack of the movie  21. The bandhas since released the 45:33: The Remixes EP  and a cover of Alan Vega’s “Bye Bye Bayou,” issued to commemorate Record Store  Day 2009 and earning LCD its fifth NME single of the week. The album  has been preceded by the March 23 release of the soundtrack to Noah Baumbach’s  Greenberg, which features both composition’s from James Murphy’s  original score for the film and the new LCD Soundsystem song “Oh You  (Christmas Blues).”

The record’s release will be supported by a  world tour beginning with an April 16 penultimate slot at the Coachella  festival in Indio CA and continuing with a run  of UK/Europe headline  dates (several of which have sold out well in advance and necessitated added  dates) and further worldwide festival appearances. YACHT and Planning To Rock will support on the UK/Euro headline dates. For a full itinerary, see  below and continue to check http://lcdsoundsystem.com/ for additions going forward.
