RIAA Gold Longform Video certification is awarded for physical sales in excess of 50,000 copies. In the United States alone, SOUND CITY has sold over 100,000 copies (50,000+ digital and 50,000+ physical), since debuting at #1 on the iTunes Documentary chart earlier this year.
SOUND CITY was conceived by Grohl after purchasing the legendary custom-built Neve 8028 recording console from the now defunct Van Nuys, California studio for which the film is named. The board, custom built in 1972, is considered by many to be the crown jewel of analog recording equipment, having recorded such artists as Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Cheap Trick, Guns and Roses, Fear, Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Slipknot, Nine Inch Nails, Metallica, and countless other musical legends over the past 40 years.
Grohl’s personal connection to SOUND CITY goes back to his first full-fledged recording session at the film’s namesake–the recordings that became Nirvana’s 1991 breakthrough album, Nevermind. Nevermind would go on to sell in excess of 30 million copies worldwide, forever altering the course of popular music as well as Grohl’s life.
SOUND CITY made its world premiere January at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and debuted in theaters the following month. For further information, go to http://soundcitymovie.com.
