ARCADE FIRE
“CHEMISTRY”
NEW VIDEO LIVE NOW
Directed by Ray Tintori and Animated by Starburns Industries
Arcade Fire has unveiled a new animated video for “Chemistry,” from the international #1 album Everything Now.
Directed by Ray Tintori, animated by Starburns Industries (Rick & Morty, Charlie Kaufman’s Anomalisa, Community) and featuring Tootie Tootz of Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce fame, “Chemistry” expands on the song’s theme of chemical attraction, turning it into a cartoon about a dog and cat who meet and fall in love at her wedding reception, where he is working as a caterer, and she is marrying a shark.
Collaborating with Tintori–whose work ranges from videos for MGMT, Chairlift, and Moses Sumney to creating the debut film for Google’s Tilt Brush and the Aurochs sequences for Beasts of the Southern Wild — has been on Win Butler of Arcade Fire’s mind for years: “We’ve been big fans of Ray’s work since his early videos and there was talk of collaborating during The Suburbs shoot–we were going to film it in New Orleans but then it got moved to Austin at the last minute, and Ray was caught up working on Beasts of the Southern Wild. So it was very full circle to finally be working with him in New Orleans during Mardi Gras. There is a playful, carnivalesque energy to the song; to capture that by filming literally during carnival felt right.”
While the core “Chemistry” story is of an animated dog and cat (played by Ms. Tootz) meeting at her wedding reception where the dog is working as a caterer, the animated characters travel to space at one point, and after destroying the International Space Station, land back on Earth, finding themselves in the midst of the Fat Tuesday in the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans.
Arcade Fire resume their Everything Now Continued world tour tonight at Ahoy in Rotterdam, NL. See below for a full itinerary of the tour, which runs through September 23 where it concludes at the Life Is Beautiful festival in Las Vegas.
