Three-Night SXSW Residency at “Eno’s” announced

Months of speculation come to an end today as details of the new Spoon album can be confirmed: Austin’s most esteemed rock ambassadors will release their ninth album, Hot Thoughts, March 17 on Matador Records.

Reuniting the band with the label that released their 1996 debut, Telephono, and following on Spoon’s streak of three consecutive Top 10 albums — Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (2007), Transference (2010) and They Want My Soul (2014) — Hot Thoughts is nothing short of an epic. With Hot Thoughts, co-produced by Spoon and Dave Fridmann, the quartet has created the bravest, most sonically inventive work of the catalogue that has made it the most critically acclaimed act of the first decade of the new millennium (http://www.metacritic.com/feature/best-music-of-the-decade). Within the space of 10 songs, Hot Thoughts creates a musical universe of its own, with individual worlds ranging from the kaleidoscopic opening title track—available to stream here or as an instant download with all pre-orders placed at http://smarturl.it/Spoon_Hot_Thoughts — through the gargantuan stomp of “Do I Have To Talk You Into It” and ubiquitous wiry hooks of “Can I Sit Next To You” to the bittersweetness of “I Ain’t The One” (which recently received a surprise reveal in the penultimate episode of the current season of Showtime’s Shameless) and beyond.

Having recently sneak previewed Hot Thoughts material in a surprise hometown warm-up, Spoon has also confirmed a three-night release week SXSW residency for which the band will resurrect the original, classic Austin venue Emo’s location, currently referred to as “The Main” on March 14, 15 and 16. The band will curate a unique line up each night and will stubbornly be referring to the venue as “Eno’s”.

See below for Hot Thoughts track listing and details on the Austin SXSW residency. Please continue to check spoontheband.com for updates.

DAVID BOWIE: ‘NO PLAN’ VIDEO AND FOUR SONG EP OUT NOW

DAVID BOWIE
NO PLAN
VIDEO DIRECTED BY TOM HINGSTON: http://smarturl.it/noplanvideo
FOUR-SONG EP OUT NOW: http://smarturl.it/noplanep

One minute past midnight on January 8th, the day that would have been David Bowie’s 70th birthday, a subtly stunning video for the song “No Plan” surfaced quietly at http://smarturl.it/noplanvideo.

The “No Plan” clip was directed by Tom Hingston, whose previous collaborations with Bowie include the award-winning visual interpretation of the original version of “Sue (Or In A Season Of Crime)” from the Nothing Has Changed compilation. The “No Plan” video features a sparse, compelling narrative that reinforces the hypnotic pull of the ballad hailed by Rolling Stone—who ranked it #4 in their 50 Best Songs of 2016–as “a magnificent coda… one last transmission from the Bowie universe.”

Recorded during the sessions for David Bowie’s 28th and final album, ★, “No Plan” is one of three final Bowie studio recordings held in the vault until the October 21, 2016 release of the Lazarus Cast Album. Previously available only with full album purchase of the Lazarus Cast Album, those songs–“No Plan,” “Killing A Little Time” and “When I Met You”—have been released along with ★ single and Cast Album title track “Lazarus” as the No Plan digital EP, issued January 8 on ISO/Columbia. In addition, the three songs are now available for the first time on streaming services and as a la carte downloads.

Despite the complete lack of fanfare around their reveal, the “No Plan” video amassed over 500,000 views in its first 24 hours online, while the No Plan EP reached #1 on the iTunes charts of 11 countries including the UK, Netherlands, Denmark, Ireland, Norway, Finland and Sweden, and broke the Top 20 in more than 30 territories.

January 8, 2017 also marked the one-year anniversary of the release of ★. In the 12 months since the release of ★, the album has only grown in stature, establishing itself as a critical and commercial high point of David Bowie’s peerless catalogue. Having hit #1 in more than 20 countries (including Bowie’s first #1 in the U.S.), ★ closed out 2016 with five Grammy nominations—Best Rock Performance, Best Rock Song, Best Alternative Music Album, Best Recording Package, and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical—and top honors in critics’ best of 2016 lists including #1 positions in the AV Club, Flavorwire, The Los Angeles Times, MOJO, Newsweek, Now, Paste, Q, The Wire, Uncut and more, #2 spots including the BBC, Entertainment Weekly, The New York Times, NPR and Rolling Stone, ultimately placing in the year-end lists of more major publications than any album released in 2016.

“The title befits a record that concerns itself with resilience in the face of utter social and political desolation…The Joshua Tree is an appropriate response to these times, and a picture bleaker than any U2 has ever painted: a vision of blasted hopes, pointless violence and anguish… Music of great sadness but also of unutterable compassion, acceptance and calm.” – Rolling Stone, 1987

Monday, January 9th, 2017 – For Immediate Release.

Live Nation today announced that U2 will return to select stadiums this year with U2: The Joshua Tree Tour 2017, in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the band’s classic album. Each show will include a performance of The Joshua Tree in its entirety, with support from one of a number of  special guests including Mumford & Sons, OneRepublic and The Lumineers in North America and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds in Europe.

Released to universal acclaim on March 9th 1987 and featuring hit singles “With Or Without You”,“I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” and “Where The Streets Have No Name”, The Joshua Tree was U2’s first #1 album in the U.S., topping the charts globally including the U.K. and Ireland, selling in excess of 25 million albums worldwide, and catapulting Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr “… from heroes to superstars” (Rolling Stone). Time Magazine put U2 on its cover in April 1987, proclaiming them “Rock’s Hottest Ticket” in a defining year for the band that saw their arena dates roll into stadium shows to accommodate escalating demand – setting them on course to become one of the greatest live acts in the world today.  The 12 months that followed saw the band create now-iconic moments: the traffic-stopping Grammy Award-winning music video on the roof of a Los Angeles liquor store, winning a BRIT Award and two Grammys – including Album of the Year – their first of 22 received to date, distinguishing U2 as the most awarded rock band in Grammy history.

U2’s fifth studio album The Joshua Tree was produced by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, and featured iconic artwork which cemented the career of photographer and director Anton Corbijn. Recording took place in Dublin at Windmill Lane Studios and Danesmoate, the house which subsequently became bassist Adam Clayton’s home.

“It seems like we have come full circle from when The Joshua Tree songs were originally written, with global upheaval, extreme right wing politics and some fundamental human rights at risk. To celebrate the album – as the songs seem so relevant and prescient of these times too – we decided to do these shows, it feels right for now. We’re looking forward to it.”The Edge

“Recently I listened back to The Joshua Tree for the first time in nearly 30 years… it’s quite an opera.  A lot of emotions which feel strangely current, love, loss, broken dreams, seeking oblivion, polarisation… all the greats… I’ve sung some of these songs a lot… but never all of them.  I’m up for it, if our audience is as excited as we are… it’s gonna be a great night.” – Bono

“We are off to play a few shows with U2! It’s the 30th anniversary of The Joshua Tree – one of the greatest albums ever made, in our opinion, and something well worth a good celebration. It’s a record that did so much for us all when we discovered it individually and if ever a record stands the test of time its that one. So when the lads gave us a call to invite us to play a few gigs opening for them it was our great honour to accept. It’s gonna be such a good few nights… “Mumford & Sons

“I can remember covering the U2 song “One” in bars back in NYC 10 years ago, with Jer on drums.  A lot has changed since then, but still – I NEVER thought we’d get the chance to open for such a legendary band, on such a legendary album – The Joshua Tree.  Their songs are so timeless and transcendent, it’s impossible to imagine a time when they didn’t exist.  That type of songwriting has always been the mountaintop for us – songs that can transcend generations.” – Wesley Schultz, The Lumineers

The Joshua Tree is the first album I ever heard from U2 because it came out when I had just started my love affair with music as a young kid… it’s the album that made me want to write songs and start a band.  Joining them for this tour will be the experience of a lifetime, leaving the bucket list fully checked.” – Ryan Tedder, OneRepublic

“It will be both a pleasure and an honour to play my part in what still remains the greatest show on earth.”Noel Gallagher

Following the groundbreaking iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE Tour’s arena shows in 2015, U2: The Joshua Tree Tour 2017 will see the band return to the stadium stage for the first time since 2009-2011’s record-shattering U2 360° Tour, the most successful tour in history seen by over 7.3 million fans worldwide.

U2: The Joshua Tree Tour 2017 will kick off in Vancouver on 12th May for a run of dates across North America and Europe, and will include U2’s first ever U.S. festival headline appearance at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival this summer, as well as a hometown show in Dublin’s Croke Park on 22nd July.

Tickets for the U2: The Joshua Tree Tour 2017 are on sale Monday, January 16th in Ireland, the UK and Europe and Tuesday, January 17th in the US and Canada. As usual, there is an exclusive priority presale for U2 Subscribers at U2.com from Wednesday, January 11th (9am) through Friday, January 13th (5pm) local times. Tickets will be general admission on the floor and reserved seating in the stands. There will be a 4 ticket limit for subscriber purchases and a 6 ticket limit commencing with public sales. In North America, all floor tickets will be paperless unless otherwise noted.

2017 LIVE DATES CONFIRMED

TUNE IN TO “A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION” AT 3PM PST ON JAN. 7 TO HEAR THE SHINS’ VERY FIRST LIVE APPEARANCE OF 2017

Following their warmly received Halloween gift to fans in the form of “Dead Alive”, The Shins are pleased to announce the release of their fifth studio album, Heartworms. The album will be released on March 10th via Aural Apothecary/Columbia Records.

In contrast to 2012’s Port of Morrow, which debuted at #3 on the Billboard Top 200 and was nominated for a Best Alternative Album GRAMMY, Heartworms ushers in a return to the handmade.  Heartworms is, as always, entirely written by James Mercer. However, with the exception of “So Now What” (produced by Richard Swift), Heartworms is the first Shins album to be self-produced by Mercer since Oh, Inverted World in 2001.

Heartworms features Mercer’s most diverse lyrical palette to date: From fictional character sketches (“Fantasy Island,” “Rubber Ballz”), autobiographical accounts (“Mildenhall”), to first single “Name For You,” a resounding call for female empowerment inspired by Mercer’s three daughters. Watch the lyric video here.

The result is a cohesive, genre defying album marked by Mercer’s distinct voice and melodic composition. Unified by his singular vision, Mercer creates a sound that is both familiar – a nostalgic nod to the album’s predecessors – and distinctly new.

Heartworms’ track listing is below. The album will be available March 10, 2017, however pre-order is available now here.

Track List

1.    Name For You
2.    Painting a Hole
3.    Cherry Hearts
4.    Fantasy Island
5.    Mildenhall
6.    Rubber Ballz
7.    Half a Million
8.    Dead Alive
9.    Heartworms
10. So Now What
11. The Fear

The record will be supported by a world tour, on which Mercer will be joined by Yuuki Matthews (bass), Jon Sortland (drums), Mark Watrous (guitar, keys, vocals), Casey Foubert (guitar) and Patti King (keys). For those fans who need their fill of The Shins live ASAP, have no fear: the band will be appearing on this weekend’s episode of “A Prairie Home Companion”, which will broadcast live from The Paramount Theatre in Seattle, WA. Find your local station here: https://www.prairiehome.org/listen/stations and listen in on Saturday, January 7 at 3pm PST.
