“White Rabbits has been a band whose straightforward rock hides a lot underneath the surface. Heavy Metal is no exception.” —NPR
White Rabbits have teamed up with NPR for the premiere of the beautiful and unsettling video for “Heavy Metal,” the recently unveiled opening track from the band’s upcoming third album, Milk Famous. Directed by Andrew Droz Palermo, the “Heavy Metal” video can be viewed at http://whiterabbitsmusic.com/blog/ (embed code below)
The “Heavy Metal” clip is a marked departure from Palermo’s previous work with White Rabbits, the performance-centric “Percussion Gun” video. “Heavy Metal” instead creates a surreal otherworld where three anonymous characters echo the song’s hypnotic loops with oddly mesmerizing minimalist body language. “I wanted to highlight the reverse and looping piano work in the track,” says the director. “So the idea of animated .GIFs came to mind, which the band loved. Listening to the track over and over, I began imagining these repetitive domestic tasks that I could freeze, extend, and repeat. By the end of the shoot the three actors were amazing at only moving small portions of their bodies.”
White Rabbits’ own Stephen Patterson was more than pleased with the result, adding, “Andrew is a longtime friend who has always understood our aesthetic and been able to visualize it in a way that really enhances the song, going back to when he directed the ‘Percussion Gun’ video. But unlike that video, we weren’t really involved in this one. It’s purely his own visual interpretation of the song. So it was a thrill to see how perfectly he picked up on the looping piano and the suspicious tone of the lyrics… as well as our profound appreciation for smoke bomb baseball. Andrew’s a gem.”
Preceded by first single “Temporary,” Milk Famous will be released March 6 on the tbd label (with a vinyl release March 13 on White Iris) and can be pre-ordered at http://whiterabbitsmusic.com/milkfamous
